"I never considered myself to be a musician when I was growing up. In fact, I was thoroughly convinced I did not have what it takes to be able to play music.

I took cello lessons and failed miserable. I took piano lessons without making much progress. I sort of learned to play the recorder in school, if you can call playing hot cross buns playing.

What I’m getting at is that I was a terrible musician. I couldn’t sing, I couldn’t keep time, I couldn’t play an instrument, the list of things I couldn’t do with respect to music is long.

I found this particularly frustrating because my father is an absolutely fantastic professional saxophone player. I figured somewhere in me there had to be an inherent talent for music.

I was very wrong.

What I realized as I grew older was that my father didn’t have an inherent musical talent either. What he did have was an unstoppable drive to succeed.

It took me a few years to get over my false idea that I could never be a good musician.

A few years earlier my father had bought me a guitar as a Christmas present. It was sitting in a dusty case in my room, neglected.

I had recently met a man named Jacob, another amazing musician. Jacob’s talent was with string instruments, particularly the bass. I asked his advice about what I should learn first.

He told me to learn music theory, so I went online and began to read. I read a lot and started to teach myself scales. I was still really terrible at the guitar, but I kept at it, and slowly I improved.

I stress the word slowly.

A couple weeks into this process I asked Jacob to teach me guitar, and he said he would. I quickly found out that Jacob–despite being a wonderful player–is a horrible teacher.

Jacob cannot think like a beginner, he cannot break down the knowledge and present it in bite sized pieces that are easy to swallow and digest.

I wrote this book with that in mind.

During the process of teaching myself the guitar, I learned a lot about how to teach guitar. I applied what I learned to write my best-selling guitar series: Scott's Simple Guitar Lessons.

I’m still learning today. Music is extremely complicated and eclectic. I know for a fact that I will never master music, but that was never my goal.

My goal was to be able to play with other people and enjoy doing it.

I've achieved that goal, and it was worth the work.

Now I want to help you achieve your musical goals, no matter what they are.

I want to use what I learned the slow, hard way to make your learning process fast and easy.

Chords Made Simple gets straight to the point

I have a reasonable grasp of chords: this simple book put what I already knew into a context. Simple, but straight to the point. I now understand much more about chords that I did beforehand. It has, tantalisingly, pushed the door open a little. I particularly liked the section on voicing.

The conference was held at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California in June 1989. The papers in this volume fall into four broad groups. The first group treats general aspects of the measurement problem and features a discussion of the history of measurement error models. The second group focuses on inference for the nonlinear measurement error model, an active area of research which generated considerable interest at the conference. The third group of papers examines computational aspects of estimation, while the final set studies estimators possessing robustness properties against deviations from common model assumptions.

Not enough detail

The book ambitiously tries to summarize the main points of many business best-sellers, but I find the summaries too brief to get a real understanding of the material (the summaries are only 3-5 pages each). Some of the summaries try to cram so much information in a small space that the writing is choppy and unreadable. I would not recommend this book.

Each chapter gives a different viewpoint on business practice and bahavior. It is a great book to have on hand for those times when you are looking for ideas to solve problems in business.

this book is good. It has some good ideas

Overall, this book is good. It has some good ideas, but one thing I would be clear about, for people in 12 step recovery who are also struggling with alcoholism in ADDITION to a food addiction, there is a mention of "having a nice glass of wine." Just a head's up.

life changing book

As a man, if you had told me I would have my life changed by book titled soothing yourself, I would have said "what a girl" comment. Well I had my life changed. I have lost over 100 pounds four times in my life and gained it all back three times. This time I am determined not to do that so I was looking for every avenue for help. This book was recommended by Over Eaters Anonymous. This book told me why I eat when I am not hungry. I knew I was eating because I was bored but didn't know why or more importantly how to stop it. This won't be easy but for the first time in my life I understand the problem and feel that I have a solution that can work. Anyone who eats when they are not hungry for any reason (not just boredom) will see themselves in this book and will see a path to salvation. Most of the doctor's clients are female and most of the examples are geared toward women but all of the explanations and solutions make sense for me. If you think controlling your eating is about will power you are WRONG! I have already given this book to my wife who said it taught her a lot.

The book is about 200 pages but a relatively easy read. Make certain to take a pen or highlighter when reading. After I finished it I typed up the key notes I highlighted so I can constantly review them. This won't make eating only when you need fuel an easy task, but without this book the task is impossible.

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky (Dostoevsky), born on 11 November [O.S. 30 October] 1821, was the second child of Dr. Mikhail Dostoyevsky and Maria Dostoyevskaya (n�e Nechayeva). He was raised in the family home in the grounds of the Mariinsky Hospital for the Poor, which was in Moscow. Dostoyevsky was introduced to literature at an early age through fairy tales and legends, and through books by Russian and foreign authors. His mother died in 1837, when he was 15, and around the same time he left school to enter the Nikolayev Military Engineering Institute. After graduating, he worked as an engineer and briefly enjoyed a lavish lifestyle, translating books to earn extra money. In the mid-1840s he wrote his first novel, Poor Folk, which gained him entry into St. Petersburg's literary circles. In 1849 he was arrested for his involvement in the Petrashevsky Circle, a secret society of liberal utopians that also functioned as a literary discussion group. He and other members were condemned to death, but at the last moment, a note from Tsar Nicholas I was delivered to the scene of the firing squad, commuting the sentence to four years' hard labour in Siberia. His seizures, which may have started in 1839, increased in frequency there, and he was diagnosed with epilepsy. On his release, he was forced to serve as a soldier, before being discharged on grounds of ill health. In the following years, Dostoyevsky worked as a journalist, publishing and editing several magazines of his own and later A Writer's Diary, a collection of his writings. He began to travel around western Europe and developed a gambling addiction, which led to financial hardship. For a time, he had to beg for money, but he eventually became one of the most widely read and highly regarded Russian writers. His books have been translated into more than 170 languages. Dostoyevsky influenced a multitude of writers and philosophers, from Anton Chekhov and Ernest Hemingway to Friedrich Nietzsche and Jean-Paul Sartre. On 25 January 1881, while searching for members of the terrorist organisation Narodnaya Volya ("The People's Will") who would soon assassinate Tsar Alexander II, the Tsar's secret police executed a search warrant in the apartment of one of Dostoyevsky's neighbour. On the following day, Dostoyevsky suffered a pulmonary haemorrhage. Anna denied that the search had caused it, saying that the haemorrhage had occurred after her husband had been looking for a dropped pen holder. After another haemorrhage, Anna called the doctors, who gave a poor prognosis. A third haemorrhage followed shortly afterwards. Among Dostoyevsky's last words was his quotation of Matthew 3:14–15: "But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptised of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness", and he finished with "Hear now—permit it. Do not restrain me!" When he died, his body was placed on a table, following Russian custom. He was interred in the Tikhvin Cemetery at the Alexander Nevsky Convent, near his favourite poets, Karamsin and Zhukovsky. It is unclear how many attended his funeral. According to one reporter, more than 100,000 mourners were present, while others describe attendance between 40,000 and 50,000. His tombstone is inscribed with lines from the New Testamen.

Check the Publisher of this book before you buy

Crime and Punishment is one great novel. However, we have a bit of misleading marketing going on here. Make sure you're buying the version you think you're buying before you order. "Crime and Punishment" published by General Books LLC is a poor quality scanned in version. If you do the "Look Inside" thing on this book, you'll see the inside of another version of the book, NOT the one you will receive.

To give you a few quotes from the publishers website: "We created your book using OCR software ..... with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos.... After we re-typeset ... your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work .... we usually remove them. .... Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. ..... We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. .....". There's no manual editing whatsover.

You get the general idea. Unfortunately, books published by General Books LLC are named, seemingly intentionally, so that they have reviews associated with much better quality imprints. General Books LLC is an imprint of VDM Published (google them on Wikipedia), which is flooding Amazon with poor quality reprints and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with the original or with beter quality imprints associated with them.

Seems like it's Caveat Emptor on Amazon these days as Amazon certainly doesn't seem to be doing anything to protect it's customers from this Publisher.

Amazon needs to start recognizing the difference in translations

This is not the version of the book I clicked on! When you look at the (paperback) edition of Crime and Punishment translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, it says right below it, "Start reading Crime and Punishment on your Kindle..." and also lists the different versions available - paperback, hardcover, etc. - and includes a Kindle Edition. But when you click on either, you get this, which is a completely different translation. Pevear and Volokhonsky have been widely praised, their translations now considered far and away the best English versions available of various classic works of Russian Literature. But Amazon lumps everything with the same title as if it were the same product. Some of the customer-uploaded images of the book's cover even say that it is the Pevear and Volokhonsky version, but it is not. It's a 1914 translation by Constance Garnett.

This is the reason people started to hate big box and online bookstores when they first started putting neighborhood bookstores out of business -- because they don't seem to care about books, just making money. But what's funny here is that they could actually charge money for the better translation, since it's new, but instead they choose to give away an inferior version and pretend it's the same thing. (They do offer the Pevear and Volokhonsky version of Demons for a price - a version easier to distinguish because the newer translation even changes the title from the less-accurate The Possessed - versions with that title are available for free.) Also, because they don't distinguish between different translations, there is no button available under the Pevear and Volokhonsky version to request that the publisher make it available for Kindle.

It's also difficult to know what version of a book is being reviewed sometimes. I'll be reading reviews on the Kindle Edition page, and the reviewer will describe the fine leather binding. This is especially frustrating now that I realize the actual content - the language - of the book I'm buying could be different from the one I read about online.

Since getting my Kindle, I've been impressed by the machine itself, but thoroughly unimpressed by Amazon's handling of content. They should focus less exclusively on getting people to buy the device, and work harder at improving the way they sell books and other content for it.

A Classic for a Reason

I initially approached this book with a great deal of trepidation. I had never read Dostoyevsky, and was concerned that I would get bogged down in some lengthy, mind-numbingly boring, nineteenth-century treatise on the bestial nature of man or something. I am happy to report this is not the case. Instead, and to my delight, it is a smoothly flowing and fascinating story of a young man who succumbs to the most base desire, and the impact this has both psychologically and otherwise on himself and those around him.

To be sure, the book seems wordy in places, but I suspect this has to do with the translation. And what translator in his right mind would be bold enough to edit the great Dostoyevsky? But this is a very minor problem.

What we get with Dostoyevsky is dramatic tension, detailed and believable human characters, and brilliant insight into human nature. Early in the novel our hero meets and has a lengthy conversation with Marmeladov, a drunkard. This conversation is never uninteresting and ultimately becomes pathetic and heartbreaking, but I kept wondering why so much time was spent on it. As I got deeper into the book, I understood why this conversation was so important, and realized that I was in the hands of a master storyteller. This is also indicative of the way in which the story reveals itself. Nothing is hurried. These people speak the way we actually speak to one another in real life, and more importantly, Dostoyevsky is able to flesh out his characters into whole, three-dimensional human beings.

And what a diverse group of characters! Each is fleshed out, each is marvelously complex. Razujmikhin, the talkative, gregarious, good-hearted, insecure and destitute student; Sonia, the tragic child-prostitute, with a sense of rightness in the world; Petrovich, the self-important, self-made man, completely out of touch with his own humanity; Dunia, the honorable, wronged sister: we feel like we know these people because we've met people like them. They fit within our understanding of the way human beings are.

Dostoyevsky also displays great insight into human nature. Svidrigailov, for example, talks of his wife as liking to be offended. "We all like to be offended," he says, "but she in particular loved to be offended." It suddenly struck me how true this is. It gives us a chance to act indignantly, to lash out at our enemies, to gain favor with our allies. I don't believe I've ever seen this thought expressed in literature before. In fact, it never occurred to me in real life!

Petrovich, Dunia's suitor, not only expects to be loved, but because of his money, and her destitution, he expects to be adored! To be worshipped! He intentionally sought out a woman from whome he expected to get this, and is comletely flummoxed when she rejects him. His is an unusual character, but completely realized.

There is so much more to talk about: the character of Raskolnikov, which is meticulously and carefully revealed; the sense of isolation which descends on him after committing his crime; the cat and mouse game played on him by the police detective. I could go on and on. I haven't even mentioned the historical and social context in which this takes place. Suffice to say this is a very rich book.
Do not expect it to be a rip-roaring page turner. Sit down, relax, take your time, and savor it. It will be a very rewarding experience. And thank you SL, for recommending it.

Sweet and enjoyable

Just looking at the bright, cheery illustrations in this book makes me happy. I was especially pleased with the narrative about how being happy affects the way a person thinks and behaves. I am trying to teach my son that our emotions can affect the quality of the choices we make, and this book makes the point nicely.

This is one of a series of books that features a young bunny and describes feelings in easy, sweet and simple language that kids can relate to. The accompanying illustrations are lovely. My three year old really enjoys reading all the books.

Makes an impact

My little guy is 20 months old. We have 4 of these books..Happy, Sad, Scared, Angry. He loves them and asks for them. I read them to him with alot of drama, so he understands. I describe what the main character is doing and point out everything in the page. There are a few illustrations that he looks for specifically and tells ME what is going on. (Eg. "Mama saying No No No"; He points to the bunny and says "He crying.") Tonight he was upset and whining about all sorts of things (very tired), so we went into his room, shut the door and I attempted to look at a book with him. He actually sought out one on these books. When he found it, he kept repeating something and making a weird noise. I finally found the page he was referring to and could not believe it! There's a page in the story where the main character takes deep breaths to calm down. THIS is what he was doing and saying. "Deep breath" and mimicking what that is!
I'm online tonight looking to see if this author has more books. My little guy has always been very emotional. Looks people in the eyes alot and wants to know where everyone is. At 12 months, my aunt bumped her head when reaching for something under the kitchen table. He patted her head and gave her a hug. He's always been very in-tune with others, which is why I bought these books. They are great!
