Running Medicine is a great resource for all healthcare professionals. I will always keep my copy handy on my desk.

Textbook Review: Running Medicine 2e

The second edition of Running Medicine by Robert Wilder, Francis O'Connor and Eric Magrum is an excellent reference and textbook that all healthcare professionals should own. With 52 chapters divided into five topic sections, it answers the important questions that any medical worker wants to know about running and runners. Each chapter summarizes the literature on a different aspect of medicine as it applies to runners, and is well researched and referenced.

The book opens with a section that familiarizes healthcare workers with the essentials of anatomy, physiology and training for runners. The following sections on evaluation and diagnosis of common running injuries are outstanding, including an excellent assessment of gait problems, and detailed instructions for clinical examinations. The sections on medical problems and other special concerns point out the importance of identifying and correcting the many intrinsic factors connected with sports medicine and running injuries, and provide the resources to help healthcare workers address those factors. The final section of Running Medicine surveys a wide range of injury management topics, including chapters on shoes and psychology.

Running Medicine is truly encyclopedic in its coverage and literature review. The only suggestions I would make for future editions would be to expand the sections on pharmacology and injury management, and to include a discussion of phased injury management plans with objective clearance criteria. An index to help locate topics across authors and sections would also be welcome.

Running is an integral part of training for most active sports, and Running Medicine is a great resource for all healthcare professionals. I will always keep my copy handy on my desk.

This text, the second edition of Textbook of Running Medicine, has been several years in development. The long wait has been worth it - this is, by far, the most up-to-date and encyclopedic text on anything and everything related to injury prevention, examination and treatment of distance runners. I highly recommend this text to all clinicians who care for runners and their injuries .
