Dog Days: Volumes 1 - 2 Omnibus Edition, by Gene Gregorits

In 2012, DOG DAYS VOLUME ONE came seemingly out of nowhere, leaving an indelible welt across the mind of anyone who read it. The book was a raw shriek from the depths of lower-middle class American hell, that grew within a matter of months to a cult phenomenon and word-of-mouth success. Focusing on the misadventures of a ravaged and unforgiving blue-collar ne'er-do-well called "Gene Gregorits", DOG DAYS presents a bruising portrait of urban malaise and unsparing catastrophe, as its anti-hero flounders through one emergency room and vapid relationship after another, during an extended nervous breakdown. From the crack and murder blighted alleys of Detroit and Baltimore to the jungles of Costa Rica, this barely classifiable meld of prose poetry, experimental horror, crime fiction, pornography, and memoir leaves nothing to the imagination and offers humor only to the most off-kilter sensibilities. Decried as unreadable sadism, racist polemic, and outright fraudulence, while celebrated by many as a return to the dark, dangerous waters of Louis-Ferdinand Celine and Jim Thompson, Gregorits' DOG DAYS has heralded in a bloody new chapter of insurrection in underground American letters.

About the Author
Gene Gregorits was born in Harrisburg, PA. He is the founder and former publisher of Sex & Guts Magazine, an independent arts and culture journal that ran from 1997 to 2004. His subcultural essays and interviews were collected in the book Midnight Mavericks (FAB Press, 2007), while his prose writing has appeared in numerous magazines, newspapers, and literary anthologies, most recently Chelsea Hotel Manhattan, Analyzing David Peace, and Paraphilia. His books include Johnny Behind The Deuce, Sex & Guts Anthology, Sex & Guts 4, Midnight Mavericks, Dog Days Volume One, Dog Days Volume Two, Hatchet Job: The Gene Gregorits Reader, and The Only Difference Between Me and Arthur Cravan Is That Arthur Cravan Never Sucked Dick For a Cheeseburger. Upcoming books for 2014 and 2015 include: Necropolis Now, Dog Days Volume Three, and Intra-Coastal: One Year on St. Pete Beach. The latter is his most ambitious project to date, an experimental combination of police blotter, drug memoir, and sociological study detailing the crimes and the criminals he observed during his first year living in Florida. Uncomfortable working with others, and having no interest in contemporary literature, Gregorits founded Monastrell Books there in 2012 to release his own work 100% independently. A high school dropout, frequent mental patient, documented auto-cannibal, fixed gear bicyclist, ocean kayaking enthusiast, and dedicated cat lover, he currently lives on St. Pete Beach, FL, where he works as a hurricane window salesman. He is 36 years old. WEBSITE: WWW.SEXANDGUTSRADIO.COM

The opposite of good, clean fun
By Andrew Perez
I don't often write reviews of books but I felt that more people needed to hear about this one. This is a tough book, an autopsy of a failed relationship, tales of alcoholism and other forms of self-destruction and the struggle to try to create in the worst of circumstances. The second half is particularly vivid, detailing the attempts at day tot day survival in latter day failed Detroit amidst backbreaking physical labor, general indifference and an ocean of booze. But its far from a slog, the words zip along and the writing is vivid and the narrative compelling. Gene, as other reviewers have noted, is the real deal, putting out fine writing in the worst of circumstances. Fans of Bukowski, Celine and Lowery should definitely check this out. The highest compliment I can pay (alongside the note that he's probably penned the finest description of the effects of alcohol withdrawal/DTs that I've ever read) is that I cant wait to read more. Check this out!!!

Not Bukowski
By Britta K. Dennison
I really do not like to write reviews, but I'll give this one a shot. Gene Gregorits comes off as a highly reactive person with no "filter" to speak of, which is exactly why his writing is great. I would not recommend it to my mother, or...most people I know, but that's exactly why I was so happy to discover it. Despite diving straight into the plot, this book was a little bit slow to get going for me, but once it got going it *really* got going. I have seen a lot of Bukowski comparisons when others reference his writing, and while I don't exactly think they are *wrong*, I see a lot more Jim Thompson influence here. I think he would probably get along extremely well with Harry Crews, (or else they'd beat the tar out of each other) though I wouldn't exactly say their writing is similar, it has certain comparable nuances. His storytelling could be best described as "real". He doesn't mince words or attempt to be obtuse. He's not a writer who spends a lot of time trying to hone perfect prose with a lot of cloaked metaphors, (which is highly appreciated in this camp)--yet he still manages to easily construct some elegant sentences--primarily, he's an excellent storyteller who strives for total honesty, including honesty that is bound to make some readers uncomfortable, because their lives have been...well...a lot less interesting than his life.

What a pile of steaming...
By N Buttfield
I can't understand why this book was published... it was clearly (and deliberately) unedited, which made for some candid and raw moments at times (his tale of woe Christmas explanation was so disastrous that I laughed out loud at times), but all in all, a truly cruddy waste. Perhaps it's an interior exploration of the misery of alcoholism, with its spectacular lack of insight, day-to-day survival and hedonistic truth, but Dog Days just deeply sucked.

Woeful characterisation, horrid plot line, terrible premise. Yuk, yuk, yuk.

Gregorits can definitely write, but that's not an excuse to turn this out to the world... Some lines still linger in my memory, which helps to lend credit to the author's ability, but unfortunately, it's the crude, violent and degenerate elements that remain with me (not that there were many other elements in the few hundred pages). Gregorits is writing with truth and caricatured decay, which may offer some readers clarity and perspective, but it's not my thing.

An annoying read... I'd recommend it for somebody looking to be shocked into boredom.
