A Strong Outing

I have long been a fan of Steven Ehrman and have all of the Holmes/Watson books he has written to this point. This one is a strong outing although not quite to the caliber of some of his earlier works. This said, it's a good read and well worth the money spent. I totally recommend it to new readers and the others of the series as well.

Excellent pastiche in the best Doyle tradition. Steven Ehrman is one of my favorite SH authors, with his effective use of period settings, characters and dialogue. The plots are sometimes a bit "out there", but they are always believable and make for a very worthwhile read.

A pretty good Holmes story

The author has concocted a pretty good story, one that even Conan Doyle would be proud of. However the author is fairly uneven when it comes to dialogue and setting the scene. The author has a better handle on Holmes than he does on Watson, and since Watson is the lens through which we see Holmes, the author sometimes has trouble conveying the role Watson plays in Holmes life. The less intelligent he makes Watson the crueler Holmes sounds, and when you read the Canon you can feel that Holmes really does care for Watson. This care is not evident in this book. All in all though this book is a good read.

Without the bad language, it would be a 5 star book.

This book definitely keeps one guessing. Four people are approached online about becoming investors and they go to a meeting held in a warehouse. They are unable to leave and are being held accountable for the wrongful imprisonment of an innocent young man. Each will have to comply with certain requirements in a given period of time to be freed. To not comply would cause something more drastic. The author provides twists and turns and tension. I thought the writer definitely has talent. So why only 3 stars? The language was crude and vulgar and because of it, I won't read any others of the same writer and I can't recommend this book. What a shame for a gifted writer to feel it was necessary to do that. While there are those who speak that way, many do not and do not want to read books with that language.

A great and highly satisfying read

The story is wonderful, the characters are believable, and John Mathews writes in a way that is totally clear and visual. I loved the scenes, with traps, and tough choices for the people involved. This is a great concept and I wish that this was done in real life! Corruption sucks, and this story will leave you smiling, with an ending that is surprising and satisfying. I highly recommend this author, as I've really enjoyed both of his books and love his writing style. Kudos!

A Brief, but Suspenseful, Read!

The premise of this novel is something that most people only imagine: vigilante justice. The world is full of cruel, selfish people. These individuals are likely to traumatize people who obstruct their agendas. What if the average person could right some of those wrongs? Would he choose to right them within the law, or outside the law—given the choice? It sounds like the subject of a Hollywood movie.

Indeed, it is the subject of John Mathews’ latest novel—another adventure into the minds of selfish, clueless, or unethical people. It is also another adventure into the world of questions, such as: “Who’s good deep down?”; “Who’s bad deep down?”; and, ”Who’s really calling the shots?”

Another familiar query is, “How are they going to get out of this one?” Much of the action takes place in a small area under tight security. So, the reader is left wondering how the main characters are going to escape, or diminish, their ordeal.

The dialogue and details are spot on. Everything from the setting to the characters’ clothing is meticulously described. The dialogue is believable; it flows nicely. The characters speak according to their level of education and training.

This book is a short, enjoyable, suspenseful read. It provides a nice break from the daily grind. It might even make you want to cheer in some places!

This book is the perfect solution, I borrowed it first

I've read Andrew's blog here and there, but often found myself with 25 open tabs jumping from post to post... where each post was helpful, my hummingbird brain just gets overwhelmed at times... due to my own limitations, mind you, not a problem with the blog...

This book is the perfect solution, I borrowed it first, from the Prime Library, and I decided I had to buy it before I was even halfway through. Everything is laid out step by step, with video guidance, and relevant links where needed. To top it all off, there are immense lists of resources for watching telenovelas, free online courses, and lists of telenovelas and movies you can find with Spanish subtitles right here on Amazon.

Now that I've been through the book once, all of the info on the blog isn't as overwhelming, I know what I'm doing and I've been able to get so much more out of it as well over the last few days, and I'm really excited about learning again.

Actually Worth It

I had avoided buying the book because I thought, "What more do I need beside the title?" I mean, it' a cool idea--watch telenovelas and you'll get better at Spanish, right? After watching telenovelas for about two months and getting no sense of improvement, I bought the book, and it's actually helped. The reason is that *just* watching telenovelas doesn't really help--it's too easy to watch for fun and follow the broadly-acted drama in general terms. This book actually painstakingly details the ways in which you can slack off on yourself while thinking you're studying and sets out clear and helpful ways to avoid them. Moreover, the method actually makes it more fun rather than less. It's too early to tell if my fluency is improving, but my vocabulary has grown quite a bit since starting this.

Three good reasons why you should enjoy this book

I bought the Kindle version of this book based on the outstanding reviews on Amazon.com. I am certainly in agreement wih the majority. The only thing that perhaps separates me from most other readers is that I am 70 years old, a product of classical learning through college and graduate schools well before the digital era. Andrew gives me hope that indeed, old dogs can occasionally learn new tricks.I identified three features, each of which merits the modest price of the book. First, the Telenovela Method is refreshing, engaging, and I suspect very effective for many learners. I spent hours trying to master different laguages in ways not very productive. Secondly, Andrew is a star at ebook learning and has put together a marvelous example of the possibilities. It is worth the price of the book even for someone wih no remote interest in learning Spanish. Third, what a treat to meet such an enthusiastic young person so passionate about his ideas.
