William D. Berry is Professor of Political Science at Florida State University. He is a contributor to American Political Science Review, Public Administration Review, American Journal of Political Science, and Journal of Politics, and has served on the editorial board of the latter two journals. He has published several other books on related subjects, and has received the Policy Studies Organization’s Harold Laswell Award for outstanding career contributions to the study of the policy making process. Berry has also served as president of the State Politics and Policy section of the American Political Science Association. Mitchell Sanders is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Florida State University. His research can be found in American Journal of Political Science, Political Research Quarterly, Public Choice, and Political Analysis. William D. Berry is Professor of Political Science at Florida State University. He is a contributor to American Political Science Review, Public Administration Review, American Journal of Political Science, and Journal of Politics, and has served on the editorial board of the latter two journals. About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

How does an authoritarian state reform its police force following a transition to democracy? In 1998, Indonesia, the third largest country in the world, faced just such a challenge. Policing had long been managed under the jurisdiction of the military, as an instrument of the Suharto regime – and with Suharto abruptly removed from office, this was about to change. Here we see how it changed, and how far these changes were for the better.

Based on direct observations by a scholar who was involved in the last days of the New Order and who saw how the police responded to regime change, this book examines the police, the new regime, and how the police was disassociated from the military in Indonesia. Providing a comprehensive historical overview of the position of police in this change of regime, the book focuses on two key areas: the differences between local and national levels, and the politicisation associated with decentralisation. Arguing that the disassociation of the Indonesian National Police from the military has achieved only limited success, the book contends that there is continued impetus for the establishment of a professional police force and modern and democratic policing, which will entail effective public control of the police.

A pioneering study of the police in Indonesia, examining key issues in the post-Suharto era, this book will be of interest to scholars of Southeast Asian politics and of policing and politics in the developing world.

Internationally famous for starting one of the first women's refuges in the modern world, Erin Pizzey is a controversial but hugely-respected activist with enemies on the left and the right, a pioneering figure in the maelstrom of seventies politics, and a key witness of the era. Here, she tells her story in full for the first time. The daughter of a diplomat, Erin Pizzey was born in China in 1939. One of her formative experiences was seeing her parents and brother being put under house arrest by the Maoists in 1949. This instilled a hatred of totalitarian regimes and for a short time Pizzey even worked for MI6 in Hong Kong. Once relocated in the UK, Pizzey was soon swept up by sixties radicalism and the early days of the emerging Women's Liberation Movement. Opening a small community center for maltreated women in Chiswick in 1971 was to bring Pizzey to the front line of what was becoming a national issue in a time when feminists were still treated with hostility and derision by right-wing figures, but also when left-wing radicals scorned anyone, like Pizzey, who put humanity before ideology. By the mid-1970s, Pizzey found herself under bomb threat and picketed by feminists for allowing men to staff refuges: this led to a long exile from the UK where she kept up her activities and achieved international recognition, while also reinventing herself as a best-selling writer. Erin Pizzey's life and trials have been unique; her story is a compelling one, vital to any understanding of a more revolutionary age and burning issues that still resonate today.

Must read for anyone interested in family violence

Erin Pizzey's memoir is essential reading for anyone involved or interested in family violence, particularly those who think a refuge (shelter) for abused women can be run like a boutique that excludes alcoholic and drug addicted women, or women who are violent. And there are many of those and they need help the most as Erin makes clear.
There have been two major influences in my life. Prof. Victor Vacquier, who was my mentor when I was a young oceanographer at Scripps Institution in La Jolla, CA, and Erin Pizzey, who I got to know when I started research on violent women in the late 1990's. That was followed by our 2001 paper on Controlling Domestic Violence Against Men [...] presented the evening of Sept. 10, 2001, at a family violence conference in San Diego, CA.
I was particularly taken by Erin's description of the failed attempt to open a refuge (shelter) for men in the 1970's, and the reasons for that lack of success. To this day only a few shelters for male victims of domestic violence exist and only one national hotline in the United States that helps both men and women [...]. Clearly a unisex approach doesn't work here and few know or describe the problems better than Erin Pizzey.
This book also presents the history of the losing battle with neo-Marxist radical feminists, who took control of the domestic violence issue to gain funding for their destructive agenda. Sadly, to this day these radicals deny the reality of violent women and abused men that Erin has so repeatedly documented and been vilified for.

Fantastic memoir detailing the ins and outs of Women's Lib

This is a very down to earth and compelling account of Erin's experience dealing with Women's Lib and it's intimate connection with communism. Erin create the first women's shelter in the US so her perspective is worth its weight in gold as someone who was on the front lines for women in her own right. Support her courage in sharing this story and if you haven't heard her speak search her name on youtube and prepare for yourself for an education.

Brilliant! I dare you to read it!

If you want to really know and understand what working with those who are abused in domestic situations is like, you're in some kind of weird denial if you don't or can't read this book.
Erin Pizzey is still the most common sense, brilliant and honest bright light in the universe for those who are cowering in the darkness of a life no one "deserves."

Agency must have

I am in half way through but can tell you already that this is must have for ad agency. Great choice of 230 campaigns (print ads, product designs, installations). Definitely it is not the shining book to just look at on the bookshelf.

What a book! This book is a creative gem. So much creative candy. I did not know what to do with myself. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the images, and stories from around the world makes it all the more engaging. This is my reference manual and inspiration for those difficult projects that need a bit more creativity harnessing. My creative director stole it for 3 days and hesitantly gave it back. It is the kind of book that you have to see and and read to benefit from it. I would encourage anyone
interested or working in design, marketing, or advertising to purchase it. It's a beautiful, beautiful book!!!!!!!!!

I accidentally found this book at my university library...and I found it to be a great piece of work.

I found the examples of good advertising to be really inspiring.

At the least, it is a beautiful book to gain inspiration from. But at its height, the connections made by the author are really worthwhile.
