Finally! Practical tools for getting real business results from training

Business leaders are accountable for allocating funds to improve business performance. But when it comes to training dollars, leaders question if they can really leverage these costs. Is training just something done away from the job, out of their control, and is over when the event ends? "Getting Your Money's Worth" candidly answers these questions. Business leaders are accountable for getting value from training dollars, and their targeted involvement will exponentially affect the business results achieved through the learning process. This book not only holds leaders accountable, but also provides practical information and tools to use each step of the way.

I found the format clever and intuitive. Half the book is for managers, and it issues a strong call for managers to take responsibility for learning's value. Flip the book over and you have targeted guidance for participants of training, helping them to truly own the outcomes of their learning. Both sections contain shaded text boxes throughout, with background information such as research findings and FAQs, making it easy to dig into details if you want, or skip over the nonessentials without losing continuity. The font sizes are easy on the eyes, pages stay open like a workbook, and the content has a straightforward flow.

In the manager section, the authors remind us that accountability for learning investments isn't new work for managers. They're already accountable for getting results through people - they just might not be getting the results they need. The book suggests a three-stage approach to leveraging training: Be More Up-Front, Be More Engaged, and Be More Results-Driven. After reading this section, I believe managers will have the process and tools to deepen their expectations and involvement in learning initiatives. They'll also have the confidence to hold meaningful conversations with learners about driving business value.

The participant portion of the book jumpstarts learner accountability with this statement: "Whenever you attend a training program, performance expectations go up." The authors present three keys for getting training value: Get Ready, Get Engaged, and Get Results. Here, the participant learns there's much more to do than just showing up for a training event. In fact, they will personally perform better and be more engaged by following the recommended process. After reading the Participants portion, I had a much broader view of the opportunities for personal growth from learning events. The worksheets are concise and help keep the process propelling forward.

This is not a book to keep on a shelf - you'll find yourself marking up the worksheets, bending pages, having "aha!" moments and (most importantly) taking action. The book provides a link and password to a website for premium content. I just checked it out and found a good selection of job aids and sample worksheets, as well as case studies and additional content.

The authors of "Getting Your Money's Worth" are true advocates of getting business results from learning. As a business leader responsible for key learning initiatives, I will be implementing the practical advice and tools provided in this book to drive value for our organization. My next step is to get this book into the hands of the people who matter most - the managers and learning participants who deliver our business results.

Required Reading for Workplace Learning Excellence

For years, Nancy Maresh and I have promoted two essential concepts with our corporate and government clients: start engagement with adult students well upstream and continue follow through long after training in order to extend the impact of learning events. And, fully exploit the relationship of each learner with their own supervisor, since the quality of that involvement around training and development is the number #1 indicator of successful transfer from learning to improved job performance.

With great intuition and solid research as to brain function processes and workplace realities, the authors of Getting Your Money's Worth have created a handy and easy to use guide for both elements of the effectiveness tandem: the learner and the supervisor.

In tough economic times, training and development budgets can all too easily be cut, but I have a hunch this book will produce such great value and tangible results, executives will require the use of this two part tool to fully substantiate their sustainment of learning and performance efforts.

Industry Standard Reference on LTE - Everything you need to know

As a field applications engineer working in the field of test and measurement, I was looking for a book to effectively bring me up to date on the latest standards in LTE testing. My own background cover RF, digital modulation techniques, and other standards, so I came into this book with a base of knowledge to expand into LTE. I make that statement because if you are a casual reader or "just interested", this book is definitely not for you. If you just want a survey of LTE technology, it is provided in Chapter 1, but that is merely 11 of the 400 pages in this tome. For basic knowledge, just google LTE.

If you are a serious student looking to understand the technology, where it stands today, its future limits, and how it is implemented, then look no further than this comprehensive work on LTE. It is already the industry standard, and likely to be the desk reference for any engineer working on LTE. Whatever can be explained in clear english is explained that way, including many diagrams and illustrations to illuminate the text.

The book covers basics of OFDM modulation techniques, equalization, multi-antenna techiniques, link adaptation, scheduling, LTE architeture, and physical transmission concerns. Indeed, an engineer working in LTE must be concerned with everything from antenna design to data formatting to spectral emission shape, and this book covers each of these topics in turn.

On top of everything, there is a well-organized index if you need to jump around the book, a list of abbreviations and acronyms, and a comprehensive list of references for further reading. As with all Academic Press books in this series (see my review on MIMO), it is well bound and will stand up to lots of reading.

Good coverage of the lower layers of LTE

This book does a good job covering the lower layers of LTE from the antenna up to the RLC. I wish it had more detail in the upper layers and the overall network especially the Enhanced Packet Core. It also lacks much material on the security aspects of LTE. I also wish it mentioned how carriers are adopting LTE and migrating EDGE and 3G to LTE. I also felt like the font was too small and made reading for long periods difficult

In short this is a good book if your interest is geared towards learning the physical and link layer aspects of LTE.

This book starts with a good overview of the telecommunications technology changes starting from GSM, leading to evolution of 4G / LTE. Basics such as spectrum allocation, link adaptation, radio interface architecture, access procedure relating to LTE cell search down to PHY level such as multi antenna techniques are covered. Where necessary, simple mathematical representations or computations, such as bandwidth utilization, channel capacity are shown. It briefly provides a simple overview of the core network (CN) component of system architecture evolution (SAE).

With an engineering background on 802.11, the mathematical coverage on OFDM and single carrier transmission appeals to me.

And for topics such as the access procedure for LTE cell search, it first lists the sequences, which is (1) Acquisition of frequency and symbols synchronization to cell,(2)Acquisition of frame timing of cell, which is determining the start of the downlink frame (3) Determination of physical layer CELL ID of cell. From here, it further delves into the specifics, providing tons of technical background and information. This is the approach used throughout the book, starting with general background information and ending with more technical details.

At times, I find the information too overwhelming for someone not involved in mobile communications design. However, this book remains a good resource both for novices and experts. I do highly recommend this book.

Nowhere = Ruthenia in the Carpathian Mountains of Central Europe

Both my parents are from a small town near the Carpathian Mountains in what is now Western Ukraine. In the last 100 years this small town has been in the following countries: Austria-Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Carpatho-Ukraine (for one day on March 15, 1939), Hungary, USSR, and Ukraine. They speak a language (or dialect) they call Ponashemu (which I am told means "what we speak") but is officially called Rusyn, and they call themselves names like Rusyns, or Ruthenians, or Carpatho-Rusyns, or Slavish, or Byzantines, or the "ponashemu" people. They are what Paul Robert Magocsi calls in this book "The People From Nowhere."

The title comes from Andy Warhol (originally Warhola), a famous Rusyn-American, who often said he was from Nowhere. The place he was from is the Carpathian Mountains and his people are the Rusyns who are the subject of this book. Their homeland stretches through south east Poland, north east Slovakia, western Ukraine, eastern Hungary and northern Romania. Various voluntary and forced movements have created large communities in Serbia, Czech Republic, USA, Canada and Australia. I have found people with my mother's unusual maiden name in Brazil.

Dr. Magocsi is Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto and the leading expert on the Rusyn people. He has written many books both scholarly and popular about them. I have found this to be the most scholarly of his popular books with pictures on every page and a good survey of the history of this people and their land. It was published in Uzhhorod (or Uzhgorod), the major city of the region, simultaneously in three different language editions: English, Rusyn and Ukrainian. The book is chronological and focuses on major male figures and historic events. His mastery of the subject is evident and the pictures are well selected. While this will mostly be of interest to Rusyns, it is a good book for getting a brief overview of their history for anyone who wants to learn about them or this region.

For some time I have been piecing together my family history, which involves emigration of both of my parents from this area of the Carpathian mountains to the US. This book is a wonderfully researched text on the history of that area of Europe, and has helped me to better understand the Rusyn/Lemko history and much of what my 90 year old mother has told me about her youth there.

In the Victorian age, bourgeois husbands beat their wives even during pregnancy, and raped or sodomized them, maintains Yale historian Gay. People in the 19th century, he argues, were virtually unanimous in viewing the human animal as innately aggressive, greedy, combative and wicked. The third volume in Gay's study "The Bourgeois Experience" (following The Education of the Senses and The Tender Passion ), this engaging, hugely rewarding survey uses Freudian insights to illuminate the dark, irrational side of 19th-century culture, which in Gay's view underpinned the modern breakdown of civilized constraints on aggression. He shows how Victorian "alibis" for aggression, formulated as religious, political or scientific beliefs, were used to legitimate the activities of colonialists, eugenicists, racists and extreme nationalists. He explores humor as a vehicle for aggression in the writings of Lewis Carroll, Heine, Flaubert and Freud, and he analyzes "the interplay of aggression and libido" as demagogues won mass followings and the middle class asserted its democratic rights. Laced with sharp profiles of George Sand, Bismarck, Sade, Zola, Nietzsche and many others, this study is rich in observations on the struggle for women's rights, the roots of suicide, sports, capital punishment, prison conditions and much else. This third installment in Gay's (history, Yale) magisterial "Bourgeois Experience" series lives up to expectations. While the earlier installments, The Education of the Senses (OUP, 1984) and The Tender Passion ( LJ 2/15/86), dealt largely with matters of sexuality in the late 19th century (Gay is an eminent Freudian), this one focuses on the aggressive urges and the "alibis" that mask them, whereby violent behaviors, racism, sexism, and so forth are both suppressed and developed. While some of this territory has been mined (cf. Steven Marcus's Other Victorians , LJ 5/15/66) by numerous Dickens scholars, among others, Gay mines it exhaustively. And he writes brilliantly. Excellent biographical sketches (Darwin, Daumier, G. Eliot, et al.) add life and color to the work, as do fascinating historical tangents (e.g., the cultural significance of the advent of pneumatic bicycle tires). With sweep, erudition, and insight, Gay (History/Yale Reading Freud, 1990, etc.), in this third volume of a projected five-book history of middle-class culture in 19th-century Europe and America (The Tender Passion, 1986; Education of the Senses, 1983), explores aggression as both a constructive and destructive force in Victorian life. The Victorians were so ambivalent toward aggression, Gay says, that they found alibis for it--organizing it in sports or duels; channeling it into economic or political activity; institutionalizing it in a cult of manliness (the courtly ideal of proving oneself through conflict, epitomized in Teddy Roosevelt); and projecting it on ``the other'' (Dreyfus in France, blacks in America), toward whom aggression was acceptable. The ``pathologies'' of repressed aggression were acted out in ritualized retribution, with punishment ranging from floggings to public executions; in sadomasochistic eroticism; and in suicide. Aggression also played a central role in the emergence of political culture among the middle classes and in the opposition between democrats and demagogues. Women, the ``powerful weaker sex,'' domesticated aggression and the struggle for power, directing their aggressive energies into prolific writing. Positive contemporary expressions of aggression included varieties of laughter from Dickens to Daumier; varieties of militancy--wars against poverty, ignorance, disease, unbelief; and various manifestations in social service, education, sports, industry, even in the use of statistics. Gay extends the meaning of aggression itself in a discussion of the development of professions, of the division of labor, of the rise of a literature of advice, and of versions of neurosis that reflected a growing belief in the civil wars within the self. The First World War itself appears here as a massive expression of the internalized or repressed aggression of the previous century. An appendix covers theories of aggression. The Highlight of the Five Volume Set (thus far...)

[...] This five volume history of the victorian bourgeois follows a freudian schematic: the first volume dealt with love, the second with sex, and this volume with agression.

This book was my favorite of the three I've read so far. Gay picks apart the Victorian penchant for cloaked agression with admirable scholastic fortitude. His discussion of Foucault's theory of prisons is a high light for this entire five volume set.

His critique of what he calls the "social control" theorists is that they fail to take into account the ability of the powerful to delude themselves into thinking they are doing the right thing, even when they are most assuredly not.
