Simple Lifetime Investing Approach That Works

Daniel Solin, a securities arbitration lawyer, has penned a short and sweet book on investing for all types of investors. The author's four-step investment strategy is one that is well known and has been espoused by many market veterans (especially John Bogle, the inventor of the first index fund at Vanguard) and the financial media (selected magazine articles and selected investing books) for years.

Solin recommends that investors follow four steps with their investments to beat the vast majority of professionals:

1. Determine your asset allocation based upon your personal parameters (Note: author provides a multi-page asset allocation questionnaire to determine a specific score for each individual's circumstances and risk tolerance).

2. Open an account with Fidelity Investments, Vanguard or T. Rowe Price.

3. Set up your portfolio among three specific no-load, low internal expense index funds in any of the three fund families representing the total U.S. stock market, international market, and U.S. bond market, or purchase three specific similar in composition ETFs.

4. Rebalance the portfolio twice a year.

The author provides readers with a specific percentage of dollars to be invested in each fund or ETF depending upon the investor's risk tolerance. In an appendix, he provides the historical returns of these portfolios for the four risk combinations (e.g., 20% equities/80% bonds, 40%/60%. 60%/40%and 80%/20%).

He appropriately warns investors about hedge funds, house funds, margin, B and C mutual fund shares, and other concerns that result in higher costs and lower returns. With the advent of the Internet, investment scams have proliferated and investors need to be exceedingly careful with their money.

While most of the author's points are on solid ground, I take issue with his chapter titled "Nobody Can Time the Market." The author mentions that market timing is nothing but a shell game, and that no one can consistently predict the market's direction. I find that assertion not credible. The main goal of market timing is to reduce risk, not beat the market. The key to investment success is to look at risk-adjusted returns, since bear markets can devastate portfolios and take many years to recover. The Hulbert Financial Digest, an independent and authoritative rating service, tracks stock and mutual fund newsletter writers, as well as market timers. The digest provides data on specific market timers that have beat the market on a risk-adjusted basis for the last 10 years or more. So yes, there are successful market timers contrary to the author's assertion.

Solin's basic premise is that most investors with less than $1 million in investible assets do not need the help of investment advisors and brokers, since their assistance does not translate into improved returns over the long term. Therefore, why pay them commissions and fees when they offer no value-added. Wealthy investors may benefit from the more complicated investment strategies offered by advisers.

Overall, the author does a credible job of providing investors with the basics of a solid investment plan and how to put together a viable low-cost portfolio that will appreciate over time. This is a quick read and will take about an hour or two to get through. After that, it is up to the reader to take action, and that may be the biggest stumbling block to his/her future investment success.

The Smart Way to Invest... Index Funds...

The book I read this week was The Smartest Investment Book You'll Ever Read by Daniel R. Solin. I loved it. Fantastic ideas that follow my personal investing philosophies.

Solin's book has four sections although I feel like there were really two main ideas. One, that index funds are a more solid investment strategy than stocks or mutual funds because you cannot, nor any "professionals," beat the market. And Two, how to invest in the index funds (the fun part.) Solin provides solid research that shows results of many studys. All evidence points towards using index funds. "Financial Experts" and Wall Street have spent lots and lots of money on marketing themselves. They pitch themselves as having a financial expertise that helps them predict the market. This is false. Marketing dollars have also gone into telling the public that mutual funds will provide a great return because of the diversity and that they are being maintained by a "financial expert" that can beat the market with their expertise. This is also false.

The Truth: You can make just as much or more money than any "financial expert" and you can do this by avoiding mutual funds and investing in index funds.

There are just a couple differences between index funds and mutual funds, but the differences make a huge difference. A mutual fund is managed by a person, this person is supposed to be able to predict what stocks and bonds will rise and fall, so they buy and sell to appropriately position the fund to make high returns... you pay a premium expense to have this "luxury." An index fund is managed by a computer and the computer buys and sells stocks to position the fund in line with the right ratio of the market. This means the index fund will always earn the market average. Now for the great news and another difference.... Mutual funds earn less than the market average 95% of the time. So you have a 5% chance to have a mutual fund that does better than a index fund. Additionally, many mutual funds have an expense ratio of about 1.4% whereas an index fund has an average expense ratio of .3%. So if that mutual fund does beat the market by a whole percent, which is very unlikely to begin with (5%), you would make more money if you had invested in the index fund. Why would you pay a premium to lose money? Great question... You shouldn't.

The book also analyzes the differences between the Smart Investor and the Hyperactive Investor. The Hyperactive investor is the "financial expert"- They spend all day every day trying to beat the market. This is very unlikely, very few individuals have been able to beat the market for an extended period of time. One of these people is Warren Buffet and it is unlikely that he is your financial adviser. The Smart Investor understands that you can not beat the market and also understands that in the long-term, the market makes great returns (9-12%). So this Smart Investor puts his money into index fund which pay the market average. Being a Hyperactive Investor is a great way to spend a lot of time getting no where... I am not a fan.

Can you do it yourself? Yes!

I am confident saying that anyone investing less than one million dollars can do so themselves, with very little oversight (checking in every 6 months or so). Now onto the what, how, and where... I am going to spell it out for you so read carefully. There is a rule of thumb for the ratio someone should use when they are going to be investing. Take your age and subtract it from 100 and that is what you invest in stocks vs. bonds. So if you are 30 years old you will invest 70% in stocks and 30% in bonds. I will use a 30 year old for the example below and we will use what Solin considers the Medium to High risk investor.

First go to either Fidelity or Vanguard and create an account ([...] or [...]) Both companies handle taxable or tax-favored accounts (IRAs and Roths) and both offer funds that have as low as a $3,000 minimum investment. This book is clearly written by a person who knows how to get quality referrals. Bill's approach is easy to learn with some mental rehearsal and once you adopt a referral mindset and focus on quality of performance to develop relationships the rest is easy. I turned this into a complete training program for telesales personnel to help move us away from cold-call telemarketing.

Let somebody else do the selling for you

Referrals now is an excellent book that explains how to obtain more business by asking for referrals. Most friends and existing clients are more than willing to recommend your product or sevices if you just ask for it. Sales people sometimes view asking for referrals as a sign of weakness or problems in the business. This is not true.

If you want to build up a business very quickly without a lot of overhead, this is the best method. It would be adviseable to first read the book "Masters of Networking" by Ivan R. Misner. Referral business has a lot to do with networking, so you must be ready to do favors for other people who help you out. Forgetting to help somebody else who has helped you will be very detrimental to your business.

Just asking somebody for a referral is not really good enough but asking the person for a personal introduction increases your chances dramatically for closing the deal.

Don't read the book all in one go. Read a chapter, think about how you can apply it, write down what you think is best for you and experiment with it.

The New Business Paradigm

Bill Cates' "Get More Referrals Now!" is awesome.

Based on a referral, interestingly enough, I picked up a copy of this book and blasted through it in a matter of days. What makes this book so outstanding is the recognition of the need to consolidate your current business model into one that is referral-driven.

Think about it for a minute--if you have car problems, need a good doctor, or want to sign up for music lessons, who do you ask? Inevitably the answer usually is a friend or associate for a referral as to who THEY use. Based on this concept Cates' work expands upon intrinsically human relationships and provides a variety of techniques for business professionals (although this book has utility outside the business world, it is primarily written for individuals/companies looking to exponentially grow their client base using a referral-based approach to marketing) to strengthen existing relationships while simultaneously generating new business.

Cates divides his book into five parts, "baby-steps" if you will, of changing from the old standard of cold calling (Brrrrr cold indeed and fineable now too under the Do-Not-Call list!) to adopting a referral-based business.

Part One "The Foundation: Adopt a Referral Mindset" lays the track for the rest of the book and makes the reader mentally itemize why in fact referral-based marketing is superior.

Part Two "The First Skill: Enhance Your Referability" describes the actions you need to take that will result in clients placing more confidence if your abilities.

Part Three "The Second Skill: Prospect for Referrals" provides step-by-step instruction on HOW to get qualified referrals in the door.

Part Four "The Third Skill: Strategic Networking" goes one step beyond Part Three and now delves into the necessity of getting your office/company on board with the referral method transitioning to a holistic concept of a referral-based corporate strategy.

Part Five "The Fourth Skill: Target Niche Markets" delves into the intricacies of selecting profitable key areas to focus your referral-based approach on capturing more business.

Cates's greatest accomplishment I think in this book is its ease of use and practicability. "Get More Referrals Now!" does just that; similar to Tony Robbins philosophy in "Awaken the Giant Within" Cates focuses on modifying your perception on the value of a concept which in this case is the referral. With increasing legislature limiting cold calling to business to business and limited consumer buy-in calls, Cates' book is more relevant and necessary than ever.

Of the dozen or so books I've read over the past couple weeks, I'm ordering enough of this book and one on scuba diving I really enjoyed to use as stocking-stuffers for my friends and associates. A great read and one of those books where your initial investment of time and money will provide a lasting and valuable income stream. Five stars.

I've read all of the books in this series and this one did not disappoint. You don't have to have read the previous books to understand this one but it is helpful. There are some funny scenes as well as steamy. I read this book in a few hours.

This is another great episode of Cyndi Friberg's best series so far. I would strongly recommend this to any reader interested in tough alien soldiers, independent earth women and their struggle for freedom.

Bravo!

I am an avid reader and have read countless legal thrillers over the years. As a retired Federal Judge with 24 years of experience, I can tell you that you will never find a more realistic portrait of how the legal system works and, more importantly, how often it does not. Run do not walk to your bookstore and grab this one. You won't be sorry.

Less than a week before the scheduled execution of Dont� Drumm, convicted ten years ago for a murder he did not commit, the real killer steps forward. Travis Boyette, a convicted serial rapist on parole, approaches Keith Schroeder (a Christian minister) in Topeka and confesses to the murder. Boyette has an inoperable brain tumour, and feels bad about sending an innocent man to his death.

Reluctantly, Keith Schroeder agrees to drive Boyette to the town where the murder occurred in the hope that a confession will stop the scheduled execution of Drumm. Keith Schroeder joins forces with Dont� Drumm's defence lawyer, Robbie Flak in the hope that they can at least halt the scheduled execution until Boyette's story is checked.

I enjoyed the first two thirds of this novel. While character development was sketchy, the urgency of the situation kept me turning pages. The facts about the case, the flimsy `evidence' upon which Dont� Drumm was convicted all heightened the tension, especially when one of the witnesses admitted that he had falsely testified and as Boyette's claims are tested.

But then the narrative changed. The fiction became a vehicle against the death penalty and thriller became propaganda. This diminished the impact of the story, reduced my enjoyment of it and is reflected in my rating.

Keep the politics out of reviews

Reviewers should keep their own political views on the back burner when they review books. Bashing a book when you disagree, or lavishing it when you agree misses the point. I read these reviews mostly to find out one thing: is this a good book, or not?

The Confession is a legal thriller by an accomplished writer, one who became famous by writing legal thrillers. I loved Grisham's early books, reading each one eagerly, glued to the pages, and disappointed when I finished, realizing that I had to wait a long time for the next one. Somewhere along the way Grisham lost his mojo, and, unfortunately, he hasn't fully regained it. Maybe I am not the same reader that I was when I read The Firm in 1991. Try as I might, I couldn't get excited about this one.

This story was written as a political statement. Fiction that serves to prove a point requires a skillful narrator, or it risks becoming tedious. There are some great writers who wrote great novels as a form of political expression, like Dickens, Warren and Ellison. Grisham is not in their league. Grisham's talents as a writer are good enough to bring this readable novel to fruition, but it has some problems: The plot is not believable enough for my liking, and characters on one side of the issue are created as likeable, basically good people, while those on the opposite side are completely bad. The story lacks realism.

Donte , who is at the center of the novel, is a sympathetic figure, but he remains a figure, not a person whom the reader really knows. Keith , the well intentioned pastor who brings the killer to Texas, may be the best described personality, but he is bland and boring. The story builds suspense in the second half, and I willingly read to the end, although I was pretty sure where it was going. This was just a fair novel, with the story in the back seat, and the message driving. I prefer the opposite.

This is the 4th volume of David Sear's 5 volume set on Roman Coins. This set is the new standard for Roman coinage from its beginnings in the 3rd Century B.C. through the 5th Century A.D. This set should be in the library of anyone who collects Roman coins. The 4th volume specifically deals with the coinage from 284 through 337 A.D., from emperor Diocletian through Constantine, a period when Roman coinage changed significantly.

All of Sear's Ancient Coin reference books are WELL worth the investment.

I have used David Sear's ancient coin authentification service as well use his books for reference. This reference is exactly what is needed for ancient Roman coins during this time period. I focus on Roman Republicans in which his Vol I covers extremely well. However, I am expanding into coins in the Early Empire period, which This Vol II covers. As I catalog my coins I use Sear's numbers to reference, although he cites all the other references with each of the listings. Excellent reference book. Period.

"What has the Catholic Church done for humanity?

If you listen to popular culture today, you might get the impression that the Church is the universal enemy. The Church stands inthe way of progress. It exploits the poor. It oppresses women and children. It condemns everything that's good in our culture. And above all, it stands opposed to science and reason.

You've heard it all so often that, even if you're Catholic, you might half-believe it. But it's all wrong, and this book is going to show you why.

There are lots of books about great Catholics who have also been scientists, musicians, artists, or leaders--people who have done some good inthe world, even though they're Catholic. This book isn't like that. This book makes a much bigger and more startling claim: Everything about our modern world we think is good is there because of the Church.

The only reason we care about the poor is because Christianity has won. The only reason the rights of women and children are important is because the Church has made them important. The only reason we have science is because the Church taught us how to think.

This book is full of unbelievable statements like that. My hope is that, by the end of the book, you'll believe them all.

Yours is the Church that built up the best in modern culture. And yours is the church that has constantly defended the best against the horrors that rise against it. It's an exciting story, roaming up and down through two thousand years of history."

This introduction to the book gives a better overview than I could.

Aquilina covers various ways our civilization has benefited overall, and continues to do, from Catholicism's 2,000 years of cultural influence. Topics include: respect for women, the dignity of children, art, literature, music, charity, and more. He makes the points clearly by showing what pagan culture was like before Christianity, the influence of Christians on that culture overall, and then shows how our Christianity-infused culture is still shaped by that influence.

One of the things I liked best about this book is that Aquilina comes from such a positive point of view. As our priest often says, teaching from a positive point of view gets much further than stressing the negative continually. I have read many a book that sets out to refute the myths of what "everyone knows" about the Catholic Church. They may be effective for a few but they are often negative in tone which makes them difficult to read or care about if you are not fascinated by that particular topic. Aquilina's positive stance is evenhanded and makes one interested to see just how he's going to pull off the next "fantastic" claim.

Another thing that I really liked is that Aquilina doesn't sugar coat it when there is blame to be taken by the Church. I have never really been able to swallow defenses I've read of the later Crusades. Aquilina makes sure everything is put in perspective, such as making sure the context of an "inquisition" and the court systems of the times are covered, and then point out where blame is to be had. He does not leave matters there, often putting our own times in proper context in ways that open our eyes further. One of the most surprising instances for me was this bit of insight about the sex abuse scandals.

"So our natural horror at child abuse--which by the way, is a good sign that our culture, for all its faults, may still be reasonably healthy--didn't come from the Greeks or the Romans. It came from the Christians. It was the Church that taught us to acknowledge the sacred rights of children as human beings.

The world judges Catholics by Christian standards now; the Christian victory has been so complete that it's practically invisible. When the babbling bloggers blame us for being Christians, they're really blaming us for not being Christian enough. Christian principles seem like part of the order of nature, laws as immutable as gravity and magnetism. But that's only because the Church succeeded, against all odds, in replacing what everyone thought was an immutable law of nature with a strange Christian idea--such as the notion that children are people too."

Although author Mike Aquilina is Catholic, his claims have been echoed to me recently from an unexpected source. Helping out with RCIA (classes for those interested in converting to Catholicism), subjects arose which prompted me to speak apologetically of how the Church has handled things such as the sex scandal.

Each time, one potential convert has spoken up saying, "Historically speaking ..." and setting the record in a larger historical context which makes it clear that shortfalls very often are not so much due to the Catholic Church as they are due to lapses on individuals' parts or even those of particular institutions within the Church (yes, Torquemada, I'm lookin' at you).

This particular "defender of the faith" comes from no particular religious background. His conversion began after visiting many of the cathedrals throughout Europe which then led him to begin reading history and noting the Church's place in it. I have to admit it has been refreshing to hear someone with no particular agenda comment on various contentious matters from a purely historical or statistical standpoint.

Inadvertently, this person's casual remarks back up what Mike Aquilina states in this book. There is a lot of credit to be given to the Catholic Church that the world has become blind to ... and we can be proud of being part of this rich faith.

Continuing to grow and learn

Mike Aquilina introduces his latest book with some negative impressions of the Church expressed in today's culture, goes on to remind us of the positive impact Catholics have had on the growth of civilization, and then reveals that this book is about something even bigger. "Everything about our modern world we think is good is there because of the Church," he writes.

The opening chapter is a review of civilization dating to the days of the declining Roman Empire, Constantine's, establishing Christianity as the dominant religion, and the growth of literature and literacy through the rein of Charlemagne. The remaining chapters focus on the Church's accomplishments in science, the arts, human dignity, and peace.

In his final chapter, Aquilina addresses the future of the Church. He acknowledges decline in attendance and other problems the Church faces today in English-speaking countries and Western Europe, then hails rapid expansion in Africa and Asia. He acknowledges the damage done by clerical sexual abuse, then explains that priests are no more likely to be abusive than the general population, and patterns of abuse are difficult to find if they exist at all. In this area, Aquilina decries the instances where authorities covered up suspected and known abuse. In general, he states, the Church has survived severe scandals throughout her history including medieval popes who were political pawns and Renaissance popes who came from murderous families.

He closes with the assertion that the Catholic Church is present and growing throughout the world and will continue to grow and learn, "always true to itself, and always faithful to the teachings of the apostles."

What the Church has done for humanity

The first sentence of this book asks the question: "What has the Church done for humanity?" In fine fashion, Mike Aquilina answers that question in the first ten chapters by focusing on the Church's influence on civilization, science, charity, music, art, literature, women, children, human dignity, and world peace. The final chapter ends the book on an encouraging note despite pessimism in certain circles about reason (science tells us what is) vs. faith (religion tells us what ought to be), the damage to the Church because of the sexual abuse scandal (tragic as it is, the Church has gone through worse), and a contracting Church (it's actually expanding, especially in Asia and Africa).

By providing a broad sweep of the Christian era in these various areas, the reader comes away with a greater appreciation for a Church that is faithful to its founder, constantly going against the culture by insisting on and exemplifying the dignity of all persons while raising up culture -- and sometimes changing it forever -- in the arts and sciences. The author provides an excellent overview of all topics (his treatment of the arts, women, and children are particularly fine) but he often intersperses the tales of individuals who had a major impact (e.g., Copernicus) or whose stories are fascinating (e.g., jazz musician and composer Mary Lou Williams) to make an argument more personal and impactful.

A book of this brevity (130 pages) leaves the reader wanting more. Unfortunately a "For Further Reading" is not supplied. But there are other places to go. There are many fine books on Church history (Schreck's "The Compact History of the Catholic Church" is a good start, but there are numerous others) and the influence of the Church on society (Woods's "How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization" is indispensable). Also, Aquilina's earlier book, "The Resilient Church," is a wonderful complement to this one. While "Yours is the Church" acknowledges briefly from time to time where the Church fell short in certain areas, it is unabashedly positive throughout. "The Resilient Church" takes a harder look at certain critical challenges the Church has dealt with throughout its history, how some of its members failed to live up to Christ's calling, and how the Church always comes out stronger for the trials.

"Yours" is a book that should get into the hands of any Catholic who questions the Church's impact on the world in the past or present or any person who wishes to better defend the Church against attacks on it. And for those not in the Church, it will provide exposure and insight into the Church's great influence for the good throughout history. An uplifting read for you and a great gift for a skeptical friend.
