Without the bad language, it would be a 5 star book.

This book definitely keeps one guessing. Four people are approached online about becoming investors and they go to a meeting held in a warehouse. They are unable to leave and are being held accountable for the wrongful imprisonment of an innocent young man. Each will have to comply with certain requirements in a given period of time to be freed. To not comply would cause something more drastic. The author provides twists and turns and tension. I thought the writer definitely has talent. So why only 3 stars? The language was crude and vulgar and because of it, I won't read any others of the same writer and I can't recommend this book. What a shame for a gifted writer to feel it was necessary to do that. While there are those who speak that way, many do not and do not want to read books with that language.

A great and highly satisfying read

The story is wonderful, the characters are believable, and John Mathews writes in a way that is totally clear and visual. I loved the scenes, with traps, and tough choices for the people involved. This is a great concept and I wish that this was done in real life! Corruption sucks, and this story will leave you smiling, with an ending that is surprising and satisfying. I highly recommend this author, as I've really enjoyed both of his books and love his writing style. Kudos!

A Brief, but Suspenseful, Read!

The premise of this novel is something that most people only imagine: vigilante justice. The world is full of cruel, selfish people. These individuals are likely to traumatize people who obstruct their agendas. What if the average person could right some of those wrongs? Would he choose to right them within the law, or outside the law—given the choice? It sounds like the subject of a Hollywood movie.

Indeed, it is the subject of John Mathews’ latest novel—another adventure into the minds of selfish, clueless, or unethical people. It is also another adventure into the world of questions, such as: “Who’s good deep down?”; “Who’s bad deep down?”; and, ”Who’s really calling the shots?”

Another familiar query is, “How are they going to get out of this one?” Much of the action takes place in a small area under tight security. So, the reader is left wondering how the main characters are going to escape, or diminish, their ordeal.

The dialogue and details are spot on. Everything from the setting to the characters’ clothing is meticulously described. The dialogue is believable; it flows nicely. The characters speak according to their level of education and training.

This book is a short, enjoyable, suspenseful read. It provides a nice break from the daily grind. It might even make you want to cheer in some places!

This book is the perfect solution, I borrowed it first

I've read Andrew's blog here and there, but often found myself with 25 open tabs jumping from post to post... where each post was helpful, my hummingbird brain just gets overwhelmed at times... due to my own limitations, mind you, not a problem with the blog...

This book is the perfect solution, I borrowed it first, from the Prime Library, and I decided I had to buy it before I was even halfway through. Everything is laid out step by step, with video guidance, and relevant links where needed. To top it all off, there are immense lists of resources for watching telenovelas, free online courses, and lists of telenovelas and movies you can find with Spanish subtitles right here on Amazon.

Now that I've been through the book once, all of the info on the blog isn't as overwhelming, I know what I'm doing and I've been able to get so much more out of it as well over the last few days, and I'm really excited about learning again.

Actually Worth It

I had avoided buying the book because I thought, "What more do I need beside the title?" I mean, it' a cool idea--watch telenovelas and you'll get better at Spanish, right? After watching telenovelas for about two months and getting no sense of improvement, I bought the book, and it's actually helped. The reason is that *just* watching telenovelas doesn't really help--it's too easy to watch for fun and follow the broadly-acted drama in general terms. This book actually painstakingly details the ways in which you can slack off on yourself while thinking you're studying and sets out clear and helpful ways to avoid them. Moreover, the method actually makes it more fun rather than less. It's too early to tell if my fluency is improving, but my vocabulary has grown quite a bit since starting this.

Three good reasons why you should enjoy this book

I bought the Kindle version of this book based on the outstanding reviews on Amazon.com. I am certainly in agreement wih the majority. The only thing that perhaps separates me from most other readers is that I am 70 years old, a product of classical learning through college and graduate schools well before the digital era. Andrew gives me hope that indeed, old dogs can occasionally learn new tricks.I identified three features, each of which merits the modest price of the book. First, the Telenovela Method is refreshing, engaging, and I suspect very effective for many learners. I spent hours trying to master different laguages in ways not very productive. Secondly, Andrew is a star at ebook learning and has put together a marvelous example of the possibilities. It is worth the price of the book even for someone wih no remote interest in learning Spanish. Third, what a treat to meet such an enthusiastic young person so passionate about his ideas.

Great read in energy literacy!

Got this as a rental for an Intro to Energy Systems course. The issues are presented fairly, in a non-biased manner. I really liked that scholarly articles are used to support or refute the issues. If you're using it for school, you can find most of the ones in the book on Google Scholar, which is a great launchpad if you're looking for sources to write a paper. Even if you're not a student, this is a great starting point to become more energy-literate!

About the Author
Philip Nyden is Co-Chair of the ASA Task Force for Institutionalizing Public Sociologies. Dr. Nyden was appointed as Director of the Loyola University Center for Urban Research and Learning (CURL) in January 1996. Dr. Nyden has worked with the City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations, the Leadership Council for Metropolitan Open Communities, the Organization of the Northeast, the Howard Area Community Center, the Evanston Human Relations Commission, Hull House, and the Human Relations Foundation on a variety of projects aimed at promoting stable diverse neighborhoods, improving access to quality affordable housing, gaining an understanding of the needs of youth and families in our local community, and understanding business development in economically diverse communities.

Leslie Hossfeld is Co-Chair ASA Task Force for Institutionalizing Public Sociologies. Dr. Hossfeld is Associate Professor and Director of the Public Sociology Program at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She received the 2005 Faculty Fellow in Public Policy and Public Engagement at the Institute for Emerging Issues at North Carolina State University. Her research and activism addresses poverty and economic restructuring in rural North Carolina and she has made presentations to the United States Congress and to the North Carolina Legislature on the subject of job loss and rural economic decline and recovery. Dr. Hossfeld is Vice President of Sociologists for Women in Society.

Gwen Nyden is a professor of sociology at Oakton Community College. For a number of years she has been active with the American Association of Community Colleges in promoting community-engagement component in course offerings around the country.

A must have for students of Keynes' ideas

If you ever tried to read Keynes's General Theory you know pretty well that some of Keynes's main ideas and some of his expositions of these same ideas are pretty confusing. It is well known by now that Keynes was in a hurry to get his book published and this is probably the reason why the GT is so hermetic. Asimakopulos goes a long way in explaining Keynes's ideas or, more precisely, some possible interpretations of these ideas in a simple and convincing manner. He also gives us two most wanted chapters with analysis of the works of two distinguished disciples of Keynes (i.e, Joan Robinson and Roy Harrod) and their attempts to extend his work to a dynamic framework. Of course, Asimakopulos' is not the only interpretation of Keynes'work. There is a whole "Keynes industry" in this world. It is, however, a short, advanced and neatly written piece of work and I consider it a must have especially for those who want a quick start on the topic.

Asimakopulos overlooked Keynes's mathematical modeling

The major conclusion that Asimakopulos(A)reaches in this book is that Keynes had no correctly defined and mathematically accurate representation of his theory of effective demand in the General Theory(GT;1936)that had a sound foundation in microeconomic theory.Thus,the GT must be rewritten and/or interpreted(reinterpreted)so as to correctly ground the intuitively correct ideas of Keynes on a sound foundation of microeconomic analysis.The foundation that A argues the GT should be based on is either the imperfectly competitive analysis of Richard Kahn and Joan Robinson or the more advanced version of the GT that Joan Robinson claimed that Michel Kalecki had written in explicitly mathematical terms three years before Keynes published his GT.The major criticism of A is that he completely overlooks the explicit mathematical model constructed by Keynes in chapters 20 and 21 of the GT.The model constructed by Keynes has an explicit microeconomic foundation based on a theory of the firm called pure competition.It is identical to the free competition assumption made by Pigou in 1933 in his book The Theory of Unemployment.This conclusion is obvious to any reader of the appendix to chapter 19 of the GT.Unfortunately,there is no evidence that A ever read Pigou's book or chapters 19,20,and 21 of the GT.A bases his entire assessment of Keynes's technical capabilities on a reading of pp.24-30 of chapter 3 of the GT alone.A's failure to read chapters 19,20,and 21 of the GT account for his mistaken belief that Keynes's analysis is unclear,ambiguous,confusing,incomplete,and problematic.

The third installment in the Captain Lacey Regecy-era mystery novels, "The Glass House" lived up to my every expectation. I had been really looking forward to reading "The Glass House" ever since I had finished "The Hanover Square Affair," and was pleased to note that this Captain Lacey installment proved to be as riveting and as absorbing as the previous two books.

When the body of a blonde woman in pulled from the river, Captain Lacey's old sergeant, Pomeroy, who now works as a Bow Street Runner, ask Lacey to view the body just in case the dead lady turns up someone Lacey knows: the actress Marianne Simmons. The dead lady turns out not to be Marianne, but Lacey is moved by her death nevertheless, especially when it turns out that she was murdered before being dumped into the river. Further investigation reveals that the dead woman was an ex-actress and current wife of a dried up stick of a lawyer, Mrs. Amelia Chapman, but who was known to her lover (Lord Barbury) and everyone else, as "Peaches." Further investigation also reveals that "Peaches" had a taste for danger and excitement, and that she was a regular attendant of the Glass House, a den of iniquity that catered to the whims and sordid tastes of the upper classes. On the very night of her murder, Lord Barbury was expecting Peaches at the Glass House, but she never showed up. As far as Lacey is concerned, Peaches' death could either be laid at the door of her cuckolded husband, Chapman, or her lover, Lord Barbury. But in order to find the evidence to capture a murderer, Lacey will have to infiltrate the Glass House, come face to with a level of sordidness he's not used to contemplating about, as well as face an old and dangerous enemy, James Denis. Now, Lacey has two tasks: finding Peaches' murderer; and closing down the Glass House and so getting even Denis. But could Lacey in his zeal to cause Denis some inconvenience be overlooking some aspects of Peaches' murder?

Swiftly paced and suspenseful, "The Glass House" was a compelling read from start to finish. Ashley Gardner does a wonderful job of evoking the atmosphere and feel of the age; the descriptions of London are vivid and captivating, and her character studies (esp that of her irresistible and melancholic hero) lifelike. The mystery subplot was nothing to be sneezed at either, being very intriguing and absorbing; and written in a very engaging manner so that one was completely hooked from the very beginning. All in all, I'd vote "The Glass House" as a brilliant read. I will admit to be slightly confused though: the plot synopsis at the back of the book describes Captain Gabriel Lacey as a cashiered officer. If so, how can he still be a half-pay officer, still feted by Society as a bit of a hero?

A great series.

Gardner does an excellent job of portraying Regency England. His character is the essence of honor, yet is by no means perfect and I find myself wanting to know more about him. There are excellent secondary characters who provide a strong sense of the period. The plot held me from beginning to end. This is a series which has improved with each book, and I find myself anxious to read the next installment.

More of the Same.

I have to say I agree with just about everything reviewer J. Lesley said. I've also decided that I really don't like Captain Lacey much. I have to admit that I didn't like Anne Perry's William Monk at first either, but he's changed and evolved and now he's one of my favorite detectives. Gabriel Lacey seems stuck in a rut. I sympathize with his depression which he would not be able to control, but he should be able to control his disfunctional relationships. He's hypocritical in his relationship with Lucius Grenville. He's willing to accept Grenville generosity when when it suits him (generally when others don't know about it or Grenville gives him the face-saving idea Lacey's doing him a favor) but if others know about it Lacey's pride won't let him accept it. It was the height of stupidy that Lacey felt he had to repay Grenville 300 guineas he could not possibly afford, even though Grenville was participating in the investigation and willingly provided the funds. Then there's Lacey's relationship with Louisa Brandon. In that relationship she's as disfunctional as he is. She stringing two guys along because appparently she can't decide which one she really wants. But she can't understand why, when she keeps pushing them together, they don't get along. Why she thinks they have to get along I don't know. Either she or Lacey need to decide to end things for the sake of their sanity or to just meet as friends when her husband's not around. J. Lesley was right when she said it was pretty obvious who did it-- he was the last speaking part standing. I'm hoping the next books are better written and less frustrating. I find myself wishing the main character was Grenville, whom I find much more interesting. And I really hope we see less of Lady Breckenridge. I think it would be difficult to create a more unappealing character.

These papers presume that disorders within each of these five clusters share genetic risk factors, familiarity, specific environmental risk factors, neural substrates, biomarkers, temperamental antecedents, abnormalities of cognitive or emotional processing, symptom similarity, high rates of comorbidity, course of illness, and treatment response that differ in important ways from disorders within the other four clusters. The clusters are not intended to replace existing diagnostic criteria but rather are used to facilitate the identification of possible relationships between disorders in terms of the risk and clinical factors. The present edition is the first to make the five-cluster structure of mental disorders explicit. Management of Mental Disorders is a publication of the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression (CRUfAD), University of New South Wales (UNSW) School of Psychiatry at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, Australia. CRUfAD has produced treatment protocols for 30 years, first for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and then with the Division of Mental Health, World Health Organization, Geneva. Country specific versions of previous editions of the Management of Mental Disorders were produced for New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, China, and Italy. About the Author
Gavin Andrews AO, MD, FRCPsych, FRANZCP is Professor of Psychiatry at UNSW at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, Australia. Professor Andrews has been an academic staff member of the School of Psychiatry at UNSW since 1964. He has published many papers and books, his Hirsch index exceeds 50 and he is on the ISI MostHighlyCited list for psychology and psychiatry with more than 10,000 citations to his work. He is the Director of the UNSW School of Psychiatry at St Vincent’s Hospital where he heads the Anxiety and Depression Clinic, the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression, and the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre in Classification of Mental Disorders. Gavin Andrews research interests began with stuttering, a neurodevelopmental disorder, extended to depression, epidemiology, treatment of common mental disorders, classification of mental disorders, cost effectiveness, and Internet treatment of internalising disorders.
