Middle East Travels 1903

The author traveled through the Middle East in the 1890s-1900 era. Table of Contents: Introduction; To Palmyra; To Homs Hama; To Aleppo; To the Taurus; To Zeitun City; To Albistan; To Derendeh; To Hekim Khan; To Malatia Diarbekr; To Dara Dara; To Hajerlo; To Jezireh Eastern Kudistan; To Akra; To Mosul and the Tigris; To Kerkuk; To Suleiman; To Shernakh; To the End; Table of routes; Appendix; Index; 294-350?pages depending upon edition.

A really boring book! The author discusses his travels throughout the Middle East, but his observations are usually about the petty squabbles that he had with many village's poor "hotel" services, continuous complaints about his means of travel (whether by train or by horse), he had utter disdain for almost all of the common-folk that he meets, and just doesn't provide much if any depth about the political incidents that he encounters. Some of his observations:
* "The rest of the Christians of Syria, living in villages, are generally a poor race of people, resembling degraded Fellaheen, but of worse morals and physique; indeed they are not worth a description, and are interesting only to archaeologist in ritual and early Christian sectarian controversy>" (p. 30)
* "The Turk is not, truth to tell, very brilliant as a rule, though very apt in assuming Western cultivation....There are few Turks who would not lay down their lives for their country, there are fewer who would save it from internal decay...." (p. 65)
* "It is also a fact that the Armenians have an extra-ordinary habit of running into danger without possessing the courage to face it....I have good reason to know that these wretches actually schemed to murder American missionaries, hoping America would declare war on the supposition that the Turks were the criminals." (p. 78)

The only redeeming value to this book is the author's maps that denote the locations of hundreds of little-known communities that he recorded during his travels -- possibly for the benefit of British military-intervention interest. Sadly, otherwise, just a really boring book of little insightful analysis.

Buy a reprinted version from a different publisher

Reprinted by several different publishers, I bought this one because it was the least expensive. This was a mistake, since this print-on-demand book has print so light that it is almost impossible to read. Fortunately, I know someone who owns the very expensive original edition of 1901 and I read that instead. The photos in this reprint are barely visible. Moreover, it lacks a large fould-out map at the beginning of the work. If interested in this book, you could only do better by buying another publisher's version. A fascinating personal account by an unpleasant person scouting the area for the British Foreign Office for possible colonization. A first edition costs $600.

Kaluza–Klein theory didn’t generate enough interest with physicist for the next five decades, due to its problems with inconsistencies. With the advent of supergravity theory (the theory that unifies general relativity and supersymmetry theories) in late 1970’s and eventually, string theories (1980s) and M-theory (1990s), the dimensions of space-time increased to 11 (10-space and 1-time dimension).

There are two main features in this book that differentiates it from other books written about extra dimensions: The first feature is the coverage of extra dimensions in time (Two Time physics), which has not been covered in earlier books about extra dimensions. All other books mainly cover extra spatial dimensions. The second feature deals with level of presentation. The material is presented in a non-technical language followed by additional sections (in the form of appendices or footnotes) that explain the basic equations and formulas in the theories. This feature is very attractive to readers who want to find out more about the theories involved beyond the basic description for a layperson. The text is designed for scientifically literate non-specialists who want to know the latest discoveries in theoretical physics in a non-technical language. Readers with basic undergraduate background in modern physics and quantum mechanics can easily understand the technical sections.

Part I starts with an overview of the Standard Model of particles and forces, notions of Einstein’s special and general relativity, and the overall view of the universe from the Big Bang to the present epoch, and covers Two-Time physics. 2T-physics has worked correctly at all scales of physics, both macroscopic and microscopic, for which there is experimental data so far. In addition to revealing hidden information even in familiar "everyday" physics, it also makes testable predictions in lesser known physics regimes that could be analyzed at the energy scales of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN or in cosmological observations."

Professor John Terning - University of California, Davis

John Terning is Professor of Physics at University of California, Davis. He received his Ph.D. from University of Toronto and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University. He was also a researcher at Boston University, University of California, Berkeley and Harvard University. Professor Terning was a staff member at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. John Terning's research Interests include theoretical particle physics, electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetry, cosmology, extra dimensions, and AdS/CFT correspondence.

Professor Itzhak Bars, University of Southern California

Itzhak Bars�is a Professor of Physics at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1971 and after postdoctoral research at the University of California at Berkeley he was appointed to the faculty of Stanford University in 1973. He returned to Yale University in 1975 as a faculty member
in the Physics Department, and after a decade he moved to the University of Southern California in 1984 to build a research group in High Energy Physics. He served as the director of the Caltech-USC Center for Theoretical Physics during 1999-2003. His visiting appointments include Harvard University, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

Professor Bars is a leading expert in symmetries in Physics, which he applies in much of his research on particle physics, field theory, string theory and mathematical physics in over 200 papers. He is the author of a book on "Quantum Mechanics" and co-editor of the books "Symmetry in Particle Physics" and "Strings '95, Future Perspectives in String Theory".� Some of his experimentally successful physics predictions include supersymmetry in large nuclei with even/odd numbers of nucleons, and the weak interaction contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, in the context of the quantized Standard Model, that was confirmed after 30 years. His contributions to the mathematics of supersymmetry are extensively used in several branches of physics and mathematics.

His current interests include String Field Theory, and Two-Time Physics which he originated in 1998.� In 2006 he established that all the physics we know today, as embodied in principle in the Standard Model of Particles and Forces, is better described by a two-time field theory in 4 space and 2 time dimensions projected as a shadow on an emergent 3 space and 1 time dimensions. His honors include Fellow of the American Physical Society, the First Award in the Gravity Research Foundation essay contest (shared with Chris Pope), Outstanding Junior Investigator Award by the Department of Energy, and the A. P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship.

Genius Laid Bare

In short, I agree with everything the previous reviewer has written. The above review is an excellent descriptive account of this book.

As a personal account, for anyone interested in Gibran himself this is the most valuable (and utterly invaluable) record of his life and work I expect can ever be produced. While most of his works are "fictional" illustrations of his philosophy (The Prophet, The Madman, etc), this book is filled with his own words.

In some cases those words are in letters he wrote to Mary Haskell. Better, though, are Haskell's accounts of her meetings with Gibran. She had the remarkable habit of recounting entire conversations and monologues in her journals so that in some cases the reader hears Gibran's voice uninterrupted for pages at a time. The wisdom of Gibran's philosophy is all the more compelling when it comes from the mouth of a living, breathing human being.

I am sure that the principal value of this book will be in the remarkable love story it chronicles. It is extraordinary in that regard. However, I wanted to add a note for those who not only enjoy Gibran's work, but who have an affinity for the man himself. This is as close as you will ever come to being in intimate conversation with one of the most remarkable human beings the world has ever known. I literally could not put this book down, so much did I enjoy his company. I count it among the most important books I have ever read.

A Book that will Completely Capture Your Heart

If you have ever read The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran then you may be very interested in Beloved Prophet. This book gives so much detail about Gibran as a writer, poet and artist that it seems essential reading. While this book claims to hold the love letters of Kahlil Gibran and Mary Haskell there is really no indication that they were lovers beyond lovers of each other's souls.

The letters are beautiful in a spiritual way and the longing so pure it is beyond description. The desire you will find in these letters is the type of desire for another person's ultimate good. Mary Haskell's letters are in fact even more poetic than Kahlil Gibran's. The journal entries also reveal Gibran's most intimate thoughts as he related them to Mary in his many visits with her throughout the years. They find ways to meet on a regular basis and support one another in all major decisions they both make. On the soul level they are inseparable, always thinking of each other while away.

At first while reading this book I felt a certain frustration. Why could they not just get married and be together? Then as the book progressed I realized that their pure relationship was much more beautiful than any marriage. I then no longer desired them to merge together physically but instead realized how marriage would have probably driven them apart. Kahlil Gibran desired so much time alone that perhaps marriage would have been too much of a burden for him. He truly needed time alone to work and create. And what beautiful creations we have today because of the sacrifice of two people who denied themselves some earthly pleasures for a more eternal gift to the world.

In the end, this book completely captured my heart. It is truly one of the most beautiful books I've ever read.

BELOVED PROPHET is a compendium of collected letters between the Lebanese poet-mystic and his sometime patron, sometime critic, sometime promoter, sometime lover, and all-time inspiration, Mary Haskell, amplified by entries from her voluminous journals.

To fully understand Gibran the artist and Gibran the man it is necessary to appreciate the the substance of this book, and the ongoing influence that Ms. Haskell had upon Gibran throughout his creative lifetime.

The Kahlil Gibran in these pages is far more human and vulnerable than the man portraited in This Man from Lebanon: A Study of Kahlil Gibran by Barbara Young, his last personal assistant. Some of the complexity of Gibran's life can be guessed at in that Young wished to burn the Gibran-Haskell correspondence in her possession at Gibran's death; Haskell had to take steps to preserve the letters.

Certainly, these letters show us a more flawed and temperamental Gibran than Barbara Young chose to portray in her book, a man subject to emotional storms, sexual desires, unrequited affections, and artistic uncertainty. In short, we meet Gibran living in and through his creative process. As such, BELOVED PROPHET is invaluable and indispensable in understanding who and why Gibran was.
