Pretty good book

Pretty good book. Nice companion to Kittel. There are solutions to the problems in the back but some of the solutions make no sense at all.

Good companion for first solid state course

I used this book as a companion to the standard Ashcroft & Mermin text in a graduate physics course. As other reviewers have pointed out, the approach of Hook is quite different, which in my case was of great benefit. First, the math in this book is not as sophisticated as Ashcroft's. The author prefers 1- or 2-dimentional derivations to Ashcroft's generalized ones using vector functions and matrix equations. Second, the explanations provide a fundamental understanding to a student, while Aschroft's writing is dense and at time can sound like a theory paper about mathematics. I challenge anyone to find a mention of Heisenberg uncertainty principle - a fundamental property of waves - in Ashcroft's chapter on lattice vibrations. Hook talks about it in the introduction of his treatment. Finally, this is one of the few solid state books out there that has ANSWERS to all the problems. This is very valuable when you need examples and to test your knowledge before an exam.

a different, but worthwhile, approach � try before buying

When Professor Hall lectured Solid State Physics on an undergraduate course at Manchester he deviated from the approach taken in the book, which surprised me somewhat. I'll come back to this later.
The book is very sound if somewhat idiosyncratic. In particular, I found that Hook and Hall used explanatory devices quite different to those followed by my other lecturers, and by most other textbooks. This could be a good or a bad thing, depending on your mental aptitude and/or fondness for their exposition.
I suspect the reason Hall used a different approach in lectures was to tie in with the way we learnt related subject material at Manchester (solid state being just one of three or four compulsory 2nd year courses dealing with atomic and sub-atomic matter).
This is not to say that anything in the book is misleading. It's very well-written and comprehensive, and if this is a subject that you want to learn more about than you can in general texts, I can recommend it as it helped me on several occasions. Perhaps spend half an hour with it in the library or bookshop before buying.
I could not find a better text on solid state at this level when I took my degree in 1995 (IIRC the first edition of Hook-Hall was 1970's, the second early 90's), but that situation may have changed by now.

Absolutely Outstanding!

Scepter has done a great service by binding the 4 Gospels and the book of Acts into one very nicely laid out, quality, hardcover volume. The only thing missing from this, as opposed to the individual paperback editions, is the text of the Latin Vulgate. Most people (like myself) won't find that to be a problem, and what's left is the text of the RSV Catholic Edition (not to be confused with the inclusive language NRSV) and the full commentary from the paperback editions.
This is the first Bible commentary that I have been absolutely unable to put down. For starters, this commentary, as far as I can tell, is absolutely faithful to the Magisterium, and the explations truly reflect the interpretation of Scripture in light of 2,000 years of Biblical scholarship. Within the commentary, one often finds quotes from Saints, Fathers, and Church documents which address the passage, something that I find indispensible and immeasureably interesting.
The work is also extremely well cross-referenced, and provides an excellent opportunity for in-depth study. This is a work intended for those truly interested in deepening their understanding of Scripture in light of the Orthodox Catholic teaching.
All in all, this is the best commentary on the Gospels and Acts that I've seen. I only wish that Scepter would release the rest of the NT in hardcover format...

The best Scriptural commentary available

The advantage of this compilation of the Navarre Bible's separate Gospel narratives and Acts is that it preserves the extended commentary of the individual volumes. Although the similar Navarre New Testament Compact Edition is excellent, its commentary is abbreviated. All the books in the Navarre series are characterized by fidelity to the Magisterium, an assumed and defended historicity, reflections by Church Fathers and Saints, and contextual explanations. There's simply no better Bible commentary available and it makes for wonderful personal devotional reading or a text for group study. Expensive, but worth every penny.

I have been using the Navarre Bible, Gospels and Acts for a bible study at church. I have found the commentary to be one of the best that I have read. It delivers extensive historical background as well as being equally strong in spiritual growth and development. This bible came highly reccommended to us by our associate pastor who has served for several years as a seminary instructor.

About the Author
An attorney and Chair of the Law Department at Bentley College, Gerald R. Ferrera's course in cyberlaw was the first to be offered in business schools across the nation. A nationally recognized teacher and author, Professor Ferrera has led Bentley University's effort to develop a national model for a law curriculum that addresses the intersection of business law and information technology. He is the recipient of several teaching honors, including the Gregory H. Adamian Professorship in Law, Charles M. Hewitt Excellence in Teaching Award, Ralph C. A past president of the North Atlantic Regional Business Law Association and a former editor-in-chief of its Law Review, Professor Ferrera has been published in several legal journals, including the American Journal of Jurisprudence, Pepperdine Law Review, American Business Law Journal, and is the co-author of BUSINESS LAW: TEXT AND CASES and THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENTS OF BUSINESS.

A faculty member at Boston College in the Carroll School of Management, Margo E.K. Reder teaches introductory law, as well as electives covering e-Commerce and cyberlaw issues in the M.B.A. and J.D./M.B.A. programs, with an emphasis on entrepreneurial business strategies in the technology sector. Professor Reder was a member of her law school's Law Review, and has published more than twenty law review articles. Stephen D. Lichtenstein has a B.S. from Boston College, a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School, and a Certificate in Mediation. He has published numerous law review articles on many business law-related topics with a major focus on privacy. Publication awards include two Ralph C. Hoeber awards and the prestigious Bentley College Adamian Award for Excellence in Teaching. Professor Lichtenstein is past president of the North Atlantic Business Law Association, and currently serves on its executive committee and the board of editors of the Business Law Review. He is a legal consultant to businesses and individuals, and a member of the Massachusetts and Federal Bars.

Robert Bird is Associate Professor of Legal studies and an Ackerman Scholar at the University of Connecticut School of Business. After receiving his J.D. and M.B.A. at Boston University, Professor Bird practiced law in Connecticut and served as a law clerk for the Connecticut Appellate Court, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, and the Massachusetts Superior Court. His more than forty articles on employment law, intellectual property law, and strategy have appeared in the American Business Law Journal, Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy, Stanford Journal of Law, and others. Professor Bird has lectured at several prestigious universities, and has received multiple awards for his teaching and scholarly research.

Jonathan J. Darrow received his law degree from Duke University, and an M.B.A from Boston College. In 2009, he completed the L.L.M. program at Harvard Law School, where he is currently a candidate for the discipline's highest degree, the S.J.D. Mr. Darrow has practiced corporate law in the Silicon Valley offices of Cooley Godward, and later with Wiley Rein & Fielding in Washington, D.C. Formerly, he served as a lecturer at Boston College and Assistant Professor of Business Law at Plymouth State University. His scholarship on intellectual property has appeared in the Stanford Technology Law Review, the NYU Journal of Legislation & Public Policy, the Northwestern Journal of Technology & Intellectual Property, and the Harvard Journal of Law & Technology.

Useful and Interesting

I was required to purchase this as part of a graduate program on cybersecurity. While I choked when I saw the price, I have found it to be both interesting and helpful. The cases which they go over at the beginning are cases that you would typically read during the first year of law school, and are presented to provide fundamental legal concepts, but the book quickly moves to cyberlaw. Some school books, I think you buy and then resell as soon as you are done; this one, I will keep and use as a reference. I like the book a lot, and recommend it with enthusiasm.

I didn't like this book...

This book is written in such a dry manner that it makes learning the material like pulling teeth. What really bugged me was the fact that the questions at the end of each chapter didn't necessarily apply to what you just read. The questions would ask you things the book never even mentioned. Just a very dry, boring book. Must be the reason it's out of print.

Lovely stories. However the Kindle version DOES NOT put the Irish and English side-by-side, as the print version does. It puts all the English translations, first, and the Irish stories, later. I was really looking forward to the original bilingual format to help my studies, and it's a shame the Kindle version doesn't deliver this. Please fix?

Do Not Buy This Outdated Book

I purchased this book through Amazon.ca and was horrified to find out that it is a re-print of the 4th Edition first published in the late 1940's. The book is now in it's 10th Edition !!!!!! The world of Gemmology has changed radically even since the 10th Edition so unless you want the book for sentimental reasons, do not buy it.

I downloaded the Kindle edition of this book presuming I would receive the tenth edition. Unfortunately it was the fourth edition and I returned it. I still very much would like to download the tenth edition. I hope Amazon does read this review and makes the right edition available.

Finally, an introduction-to-folklore textbook that doesn't read like a textbook. The clarity, illustrations, and organization of this book are perfect for folklore students. I wish I had a book like this when I was a beginning student.
