Understanding experimental EPR results made easy

Just as its title implies, this book is devoted to electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) properties of atoms and molecules containing unpaired electrons. Written by one of the most senior, and best known, authorities on EPR of small molecules, it is unique in its hands-on approach to the understanding and analysis of the experimental EPR spectra. Started as a practical introduction into the theory of EPR spectra for new co-workers arriving to Prof. Weltner's laboratory, this book enables a student or scientist already comfortable with the concepts of spin and quantum mechanics, but not yet intimate with the field of EPR, to enter this new area as rapidly, and as painlessly as possible. The bulk of the book goes through a careful analysis of experimental EPR results for representative systems, paying careful attention to the physical sources of interactions observed in the spectra. A special emphasis, lacking in most other sources, is given to the relationship between gas-phase and matrix isolation experiments. The book is accompanied by a comprehensive review of experimental data for small molecules published before 1983. Although somewhat dated, this data is still immensely useful, and is not easy to find otherwise. This book will is a welcome, and little known, addition to a bookshelf of any researcher working in the field.

Great book to share with a child...

I can not say enough good things about this book. It teaches us that parrots are very social creatures that are best left to live in flocks in the wild. The story is written so that a child can enjoy and understand it. The illustrations are breathtakingly beautiful.

After the story is told, the author includes information on parrots as well as things we can do to help protect them. The two stories about former pet parrots now living in rescues brought tears to my eyes.

It is also important to note that the author went the extra mile to have this book printed on paper that is made from 10% flax, 40% recycled post comsumer waste, and 50% sustainably harvested trees. Many books are printed on paper made from Indonesian ranforest trees; contributing to the destruction of the parrots native habitat.

Kudos to Myra Tweti for an excellent family-friendly and eco-friendly book!

Learned about parrots, but in a fun way

I read 'Here, There and Everywhere' to my 4-year-old daughter and she loved it -- we both did. Sreeeet is a lorikeet who is captured and taken from his home and family and ends up with an apartment-dwelling family in New York. The story, told from Sreeeet's point of view, explains why parrots are unhappy in captivity, and why they behave the way they do when trapped. My daughter and I learned about something we see every day -- the brightly colored parrots in the neighborhood pet store. They are no longer just another animal to look at and then walk by. In addition, this is just a good story. We laughed at the funny parts, swooned at the beautiful parts, and couldn't wait to see how it ended. My daughter asked me to please read it to her again the next night, and I did.

Don't miss this fabulous children's book

When I bought my first copy and read it with my niece who is 10, she loved it and both of us were amazed at the beautiful artwork. This book is not a fantasy book, it's about a group of parrots, one of whom is trapped in the wild and taken for sale to another country but eventually winds his way back home. It gives children a taste of the problems encountered in the illegal wild bird trade which is an important dose of reality. I was so impressed I bought a second copy for my grandchildren, ages 5 and 10, and I highly recommend this book to anyone. It is beautifully done and educational at the same time.

A view of the facts

Hallelujah!!! A Photoshop book that indicates new or improved Photoshop features! Throughout the book you will find a red star within the Table of Contents or within a set of text telling the reader that this is something new or improved in the Photoshop program. It is astonishing how few books on this subject provide this.

Having begun this review on a happy note let me further the notion that it is an excellent text if you are the kind of person that likes to have all of the facts. There are books on Photoshop that instruct the reader to do this, and then do that, etc., to achieve a certain goal. Well, this book will also instruct you in a similar fashion but will also furnish you with much more detail to foster a good understanding of why you are doing this or that. In fact, in addition to the paper book, it will also give you the ability to download an eBook or PDF version of the complete text, and, at no additional charge. Thus learning need not be limited to the computer on which you have Photoshop installed. But first, let’s look at the hard facts about this book.

Visual Quick Start, Photoshop CC (let’s use PSCC from here on) is a 520 page paper back volume. It lists for $39.99, however, as of the writing of this review, it sold on Amazon for $31.33. A Kindle edition is available for $16. The Book Level is rated at Beginner/Intermediate, a rating with which I would agree with more emphasis on the more experienced Beginner. The authors, Elaine Weinmann and Peter Lourekas, in addition to being prolific authors, are also designers and have taught the subject at a number of prestigious schools of design. Addition-ally, the reader can download many of the photos used in the book, so that you can follow along with the lessons using the same photos.

As I alluded to in the beginning of this review, this is a book for people who learn by doing as well as by inhaling all of the pertinent information about a procedure, process or whatever is the subject matter being studied. It is a no-nonsense book that gets right into Photoshop CC in all of its phases. There were a considerable number of instances where I learned something new or at least new to me. After a few of these, I went back to Photoshop CS5 which also resides on my computer and invariably, that feature or process was on CS5 as well. The point here is the fact that all of the previous books that I had read on CS5 did not contain any information on these nuances of Photoshop even though they were part of the program. It is also evidence that the authors of this book on PSCC are not leaving anything out because it is from a previous version of the program. For beginners, that is a crucial point. As a beginner, you want to learn all you can about PSCC even though the information may be old to a veteran. You can see why the book is 520 pages long. It is because it is comprised of a considerable amount of information about its subject. Also, as stated previously, it is a no-nonsense book that eschews flowery language and gets right to the point. This fact may be a stumbling block to some beginners who have no experience with programs like Photoshop.

The book covers all phases of Photoshop CC including Adobe Bridge and Cam-era Raw. It then provides good basic sections on Workspace, Panels & Presets, Pixel Basics, Layer Essentials Selections & Masks, History and Using Color. This is followed by what many Photoshop users consider to be the reason for its existence, namely, Adjustments. This is a prologue to all of the creative phases of the program with a number of sections that I won’t list here. One of the last sections surprised me, but in retrospect, made me realize what a clever piece it was, all in one place. It was a section on Preferences. If you have ever used a computer, you realize that every program has a number of preferences which enable the user to direct the program’s responses in a manner in line with the user’s work-flow. Well, you can imagine the number of preferences Photoshop embodies. Well, here is section listing all of Photoshop’s preferences (including Adobe Bridge) in one place. That’s almost worth the price of the book.

I’ve spoken about this book’s ability to educate the new user but it also has considerable value as a reference tome. Its Table of Contents and its Index both provide a very useable look-up facility. It is fairly easy to find a wanted subject within the book in short order.

In summary, I found Visual Quickstart Guide, Photoshop CC to be a fact filled book. It may take a little longer to get through it but the reader will be much better prepared for all that Photoshop CC can offer. For the experienced Photoshop user, it offers much information as a reference manual in a very useable size.

A Photo Shop CC 2015 Reference Manual: Visual QuickStart Guide by Elaine Weinman and Peter Lourekas

The Photoshop CC: Visual QuickStart Guide 2015 by Weinmann and Lourekas is not for the beginner in Photo Shop. Although PACKED with all sorts of helpful text, screen shots, and photo illustrations; I had to STOP reading it after about 25 pages, and switch to the Faulkner Book. The Visual QuickStart Guide is so detailed that one is left "not finding a tree in a forest" (or some such slang-you know what I mean). It is a very detailed and Technical book which is a good supplement to the official "Classroom In A Book" product by Adobe. As for practicality it is somewhat deficient in its 1) use of infrequently worded vernacular(it's made for those people with fantastic English skills), 2) Lack of follow along Lessons such as the Faulkner book provides. It's advantage is that it is extremely detailed and could be used as a reference book for the Photo Shop "purist". Even though I stopped reading it for now, I will probably appreciate it better as I finish the Faulkner book and become more familiar with Photo Shop 2015 CC. A good reference book for the Photo Shop CC 2013 to CC 2014 veterans; quite harder for the beginner at the CS-5 or CS-6 Level.

Like he was with me on every buy

I have done business in China since 1986. I know from experience how tricky and dangerous it is, especially for the newcomer. Curiously Mr. Midler refers to suppliers in Shantou (Canton Province) and I too have many suppliers there. Apparently this behavior amongst the Chinese is across the board no matter what product you work with. And they don't care no matter what threats or promises you make. I actually had one supplier who told me he would no longer sell to me because "you complain too much"! No loss to me, easily replaced you can be sure. Communists or not, the almighty greenback is king in China but as Mr. Midler makes very clear, it is not going to get you what you think you contracted for. Something close, maybe, but not right on target. The Chinese screwed up so many of my shipments that I got the distinct impression that the translaters were interpreting my directions, not translating them. So I spent years learning to speak Mandarin. I am totally fluent now, have often been mistaken for being Chinese on the telephone by those who had not yet met me. No matter, I told them straight out what I wanted in their own language and STILL they basically did it wrong to shave off a few bucks to their advantage. I could never understand that way of thinking, in America we keep the customers happy to perpetuate our business with them, we do not consistently antagonize them. This book will open your eyes if you want to do business in China and if you are already there you cannot help but agree with everything he says. Pay close attention, he knows what he is talking about. They will go behind your back and try to deal directly with your customer, they will yes you to death and then do whatever they please without any regard for you or your customer. I can offer dozens of examples but the one that most illustrates this is the supplier who sent the advance samples for approval, they were perfect. He then went and made the million piece order to his own liking. It was a Halloween item to be made in Orange and Black, the 1000 piece advance samples were right on the money. When the order came in, it was made in Red and Blue. They told us the factory boss thought Orange and Black was a terrible color combination so he made what he thought was pretty. Hence we had a million red and blue product with ghosts and goblins and all printed on them, in red and blue and the words "Happy Halloween". THAT is when we transferred half our entire production of all products to India. We still do some business in China but had I read this book twenty years ago I never would have gotten involved in China at all!
I highly recommend this book, it is all true and frightening so use it well and be aware. Be very aware.

Good Read for Understanding China Business

Well written book that explains the (grimy) undercurrents of the China's small and medium business. The cost pressures exerted by n-layered sourcing models that promises "Cheap and High Quality" Made in China products that can be pedaled to very customers whose jobs were made obsolete. The so called explanation is that outsourcing helps the business focus on activities that generates higher value.

A quick read of the book will give the reader some amount of understanding why most businesses are taking back manufacturing to their respective countries - growing risks of doing business in China.

China is becoming a country with increasing levels of education, leading to increasing ambitions, increasing leverages, increasing shortcuts and increasing workarounds - all with one outcome more wannabe entrepreneurs who will take money from anyone and promise anything for personal gain.

This generation is way ahead of the cultural revolution generation who was so denounced by Stanley Chao in his book about China. This is the post 80's and post 90's generation who grew up in the oxymoronic dynamic of getting everything they want and being under constant competitive pressures. This is generation who wants to be the next Jack Ma or Pony Ma. This is the entitled generation.

The government's reluctance to enforce regulations, especially when it comes to cross border trades and transactions encourages proliferation of such "entrepreneurs" and seeding of such behavior.

Having said all this, there are certain good things about the businesses here and the spirit to get things done. One thing I personally would have like to see would have been some of the positive sides of maturing China business (may be, the author might be writing a book called "nicely made in china: the insider reviews the better side of China")

Wonderful insiders view

It's not remotely perfect, but it's very readable with well chosen anecdotes that drive the point home. Ideally there would have been more data to drive the author's point home, however, I think it's effective nonetheless. I found this is valuable if for no other reason than understanding cultural differences when doing business with Chinese manufacturing business.

Final point I was shocked how well this reaffirmed my own personal experiences working for a particular Chinese run computer hardware company. I had assumed the negotiating style was an isolated case to that particular ownership group, but I found the same tactics and behavior in this book.

Fair Game is book 2 in the Wish Come True series. Although it can be read as a stand-alone book, I think you'll enjoy it even more if it is read after Date Night.

When I wrote Date Night during National Novel Writing Month in 2013, my intention was to write a single book. However, I was sharing snippets of my book on a writing forum and one of the other authors made a comment about how yummy the character Jared was and asked if he was going to get his own book. Hmmm...I really hadn't planned on it. But the comment started the wheels turning in my head.

Fair Game was such a fun book to write because Jared and Leah are adversarial in the beginning. It was interesting to write about Jared's actions as a jerk - and yet all the while his thoughts are completely the opposite because he's in love with Leah. It really goes to show that one never truly knows the private thoughts of others.

One of the most interesting aspects of this series is that the two love stories (Jordan and JT in Date Night and Jared and Leah in Fair Game) are actually happening concurrently. In fact, four scenes from Fair Game are directly out of the book Date Night but written entirely from the perspective of Leah and Jared. I hope the readers will find those scenes as fun and interesting as I did when I wrote them.

Fun Facts: The hero in Fair Game is modeled after my real life nephew Jared (physical attributes, family member names...and maybe a few personality traits) and the heroine in Date Night is modeled after my real life niece Jordan (physical attributes, family member names...and all of her outfits I stole from FB pictures!). So naturally I have to write a book for my niece Tyler as well. I'm in the process of writing Begin Again - book 3 in the Wish Come True serires. Tyler was introduced in Date Night briefly as Jordan and Jared's cousin and makes another appearance in Fair Game. Her story is coming soon...as soon as I can get it down on paper.

This is another great read from RC Matthews. It's a continuation from her first book "Date Night" which I also highly recommend. Jared and Leah's story.

Jared's sister Jordan is Leah's best friend. So she's off limits to date right? Wrong. Jared has been in love with her for a better part of his life. When Jordan started dating Jared's best friend that opened the door for him to pursue Leah. She has issues with Jared because he wants to become a Doctor. Leah's Dad is a Doctor and never had time for her because he was always working. She swore that she would never date or become involved with a Doctor because of this. Yes, she has Daddy issues.

Jared is finishing his classes and going through finals. On a bet one night in the bar he gets to spend time with Leah. Trying not to wear his heart on his sleeve he pursues her. Slowly he is breaking through her barrier of dislike for men in the medical field. They find that they have a spark which can only be satisfied between each other.

If you enjoy books that continue in a series you'll definitely enjoy this one.

Leah and Jared are quite the pair, the perfect pair to be exact. Resisting each other was easy…until now. With Jared’s sister openly dating his best friend, it’s his time to shine. He has loved Leah, his sister best friend, for all his life. Now that he knows ‘the best friend’ is no longer off limits, he will do anything he can to win her heart.

I loved that it was made clear from the very start what intentions Jared had and that Leah was against it all. Well…her mind was against the idea but her heart was another story. They made me laugh and they had me hoping through the entire book that Jared would find a way to help Leah get past her fears. As I’ve said before, Matthews knows how to put family and love into a story perfectly. This family has won my vote all over again!

Oh! I also enjoyed getting a small recap of her last story, one of which both Jared and Leah were involved in. It let me see specific moments through Jared and Leah eyes that made me enjoy those scenes all over again.
This was one of the cutest reads I have had the pleasure of reading in a while. It didn’t have any crazy drama that made me worry how they were going to fix it. It was just a simple love story on falling in love and the fears that come along with it.

R.C. Matthews is a new author for me whose books I have come to enjoy. She is an author who never fails to provide a well written and easy read.

Her next book is Begin Again, the third of her Wish Come True Series and I will definitely be picking up a copy. You don’t have to read them in the order they come out but, you will want to read them all!

Another perfect love story from R.C. Matthews

I loved this book! After reading Date Night, I thought I had both Jared and Leah figured out – but this book changes all of that. This book expands each of their characters and made me want a happy ending for them just as much as I wanted one for Jordan and JT. It was so interesting to see their perspectives on scenes that happened in Date Night – it really proves that you never can be 100% sure about how another person is thinking or reacting to different situations. I particularly loved seeing a whole new side to Jared – and how he patiently removed each of the barriers to a relationship that Leah put up. I also liked that this story provided a glimpse at the future – I appreciate knowing that the happily ever after really does continue on into the future.

"As writers," says Robert Olmstead in his introduction to Elements of the Writing Craft, "we have our destination in mind: novel, short story, essay, memoir." In order to reach that destination, we must first pass along any number of byways, choosing how to tell our stories, bring our characters and settings to life, present time and point of view, and employ voice and language. Olmstead uses excerpts from the works of John McPhee, Jamaica Kincaid, Michael Ondaatje, Wallace Stegner, Flannery O'Connor, and some 150 or so other masters of the language to investigate as many aspects of the writing craft. Each excerpt is followed by an analysis of the ways in which the writing accomplishes its task, be it creating a character who is crazy, making quick shifts in time, or telling your story from a child's perspective. The analysis, in turn, is followed by a series of writing exercises that enable you to play around with that element of writing. "The best writers have already written the best [works]," challenges Olmstead. "Until you write one better."

AN AUTHOR'S 'BEST FRIEND'

There are a lot of how-to books for beginners on how to write fiction and non-fiction, but very few for the more advanced writer who wants to excel--that is, until a writer friend discovered and referred me to Robert Olmstead's "Elements of the Writing Craft." It was like discovering a rare jewel. Best of all, it was easy to read and easy to follow the well-planned exercises.

The book is incredible, analyzing works of the masters. Olmstead fills the book with exercises the author can apply to their own work. His guide to better writing has been an incredible help to me, and I highly recommend this one-of-a-kind book to develop better writing skills.

For me, this book is more than one I read; it's one I actually use. It's never far from my desk. It's my go-to reference source when I don't know how to write my way out of a corner. It's the thing that helps me make something ordinary into something else--something better. I love this book. I've been relying on it for years.

The most useful guide for writers I've read

Often when I come across a book considered a guide for fiction writers, I feel first an excitement and then a letdown. So many of these books are impractical and strictly theoretical, never allowing you to move easily from idea to example. Olmstead's book is the exception. In it, he has considered nearly every way writers tell stories, provided excellent examples of their methods and explained the effect, and followed these with exercises for the reader/writer. A number of my short stories contain passages that began as products of these exercises. You can't beat that for practicality. If you write, and you want to expand your understanding of crafting your stories, buy this book. Read it as a companion to John Gardner's Art of Fiction.
